Navarro pros:

Plays SS, 2B and 3B competently

Decent OBP skills

Capable of gap power

22 in AAA -- Navarro has time to grow

Navarro cons

Not able to claim SS as his own in the minors

Inconsistent year-to-year offensively

Possible utility ceiling rather than prospective starter

Nowhere near the bat to make the 3B utility truly useful

Neither dominant speed tools nor stand-out power tools nor high-level discipline

Projection:

Somewhere between a starting 2B and a utility infielder depending on his OBP skills and gap power, which still has a bit of projectability to it. Still has a chance to work out at SS but that's not where the smart money seems to lie at the moment.

Think he could do pretty well. Another guy ahead of the age curve. May be able to fight Iglesias for short. Probably a utility guy though. Possibly third base if he fills out alott more.

Is he going to stay with the team for the rest of the season as the 2B, because I would rather like to see Lowrie playing there for the rest of the season

I don't know if he is going to play with the team for the rest of the season, but I'd rather see Lowrie as well.

SoxProspects says he will be ready in mid 2012. I know, SP isn't the best source for prospect information, but if he's here two years earlier than he should be, that's probably not a good sign. Its a move of desperation, pretty much.

My, isn't that gloomy.

Two reasons for an early arrival, either a desperation move or maybe, just maybe, the guy might be ready to get a taste? He's hitting pretty well in Pawtucket, better than could have been reasonably anticipated.

He's up early for his glove. He won't be on the opening day roster next year.

When he was first called up, Josh Reddick was certainly a major prospect. So I disagree with you.

This kid is not being called up "early." He's in Pawtucket, and he was playing well there. We have impending holes in a couple positions he can fill and I would be shocked if he wasn't back up this September if we need an infielder. He looks like a guy who's advanced faster than the org has anticipated and the last time I checked he was in the lower middle of the Soxprospects top 10 so this definitely isn't a guy coming out of nowhere.

BTW Navarro's career minor league line is a pretty decent .281/.348/.429. Not world-beating, but creditable, especially for a shortstop -- there's not a lot of SS right now that have a big league line any better than that. This guy may not be high profile, but IMHO it's more because he's underrated and a bit unheralded than because he's no good.

Its not gloomy. I just am always wary of bringing up guys too early. What happens when you bring up a team's best offensive prospect, despite only having 40 games in AAA? He's hitting .239, that's what. It messes with their heads, and there are very good reasons why player development takes time.

Prolly Reddick.

Point is though, the franchise doesn't consider a callup a "rush" any time after a player has played for a couple weeks in AAA and has made that clear in the past. Navarro has demonstrated enough progress that IMHO he's somewhere around our #6 prospect when you combine performance, tools, age, present skill level and projectability.

Reddick is on fire right now in Pawtucket. 4 homeruns in Three days. The other night he went five for five. Rizzo is most lokely the top offensive prospect right now though overall. Either he or Lavernway.
