Papelbon and Bard will rest today

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff July 28, 2010 01:33 PM

Terry Francona said the Sox would not use Daniel Bard or Jonathan Papelbon today.

Bard has pitched six of the last nine days, throwing 80 pitches. Papelbon has pitched four of the last six days, throwing 82 pitches.

Being a manager means making difficult decisions and Francona used his two best relievers to secure the win last night knowing that would make them unavailable today.

That leaves a bullpen of Scott Atchison, Manny Delcarmen, Ramon Ramirez and Hideki Okajima — and ostensibly Tim Wakefield.

So the Sox will need the nine innings from Josh Beckett or 15 runs. Just kidding. Or maybe not.

In other news:

* J.D. Drew could get an MRI today, perhaps even during the game, so the Sox can get an idea of what they're dealing with in terms of his left hamstring. Dr. Lewis Yocum is handling the arrangements.

* Victor Martinez told Francona after the game last night that he felt great and wanted to play today. With the day off tomorrow, the manager agreed. With Drew out, they needed the bat.

* Nothing new on Mike Lowell or Jacoby Ellsbury.

* Neither team is taking BP today.

While Beltre's contributions have been spectacular, I'm really impressed by Scutaro.

And I was against signing him.

Agreed. Nothing earth shattering but has had to fill in the leadoff job and has a respectable OBP and among the league leaders in P/PA. Also has been an above average defender according to UZR.

Did anyone else see both Patterson and Hermida just let those two balls fall a foot in front of them? That should be completely unacceptable, both of those were easy plays and they showed zero hustle.

Where the hell is Cameron? Just because Patterson is on the roster does not mean you need to use him.

Also we have the day off tomorrow, Papelbon and Bard should absolutely be available to pitch tonight. f***ing A Tito...

Did Patterson and Hermida just let those balls drop? Are you F*&king Kidding me right now? I am surprised McDonald did not let Callaspo's PF drop.

Also, why the hell is Patterson even in the lineup? I really do not get this at all.

Jed should be playing 2B

Cameron CF

Nava LF (yes, I know Nava is in Triple-A)

Nava is hitting close to .300 and Hermida and Patterson are around .200. WTF is Francona doing

Ok, I am glad I am not the only one. WTF is going on? Do they have money on the Angles winning?

That is Tito at his best. Sometime I really like him, but right now he is f***ing the Sox and I really, really hope the front office is watching. They need to make some moves other than the BP if they want to make the playoffs?

Also, we should all be ok with Bard and Pap sitting tonight. They have both thrown a lot the past week. We do not need them going down as well. The Sox have enough players on the DL.

The AAA OF of Nava-Kalish-Reddick would be a significant upgrade over Hermida-Patterson-McDonald

McDonald I could live with, but I do agree with the rest.

Also, last time I checked, Reddick was not hitting at all.

Solution-- Nava-Kalish-McDonald

But seriously, Hall can play the outfield, so why have Patterson/Hermida in, and leave Lowrie out, especially after a big game for him yesterday. Hermida plays poor defense and is seriously slumping. Lowrie is a significantly better 2B than Hall, Hall is a significantly better OF than Hermida, so put Lowrie at 2B, and Hall in LF. Is that a hard decision?

Ya he's had a rough year, but he has a .935 OPS since the ASB. Also Patterson and Hermida don't hit at all so I'd take my chances

I agree. Jed needs to be in the lineup. He is also a 100 times better 2B than Hall.

Seriously, Tito is great at dealing with personalities and all, but he never seems to want the best players available, so we get an ugly bobble from Hall.

$3.4 mil/yr for that kind of performance when we have at least two players on the 40 man that have demonstrated that they can outplay him in every phase of the game. That's why Hermida isn't getting any love around here. He plays s***** D and can barely hit his weight. I'd rather see Hall out there.

Lol no one on this forum likes Hermida.

Do you? He costs more than he's worth, he's bad defensively, he's hitting badly, he doesn't have value as a pinch runner, and he has been on this team for less than a year, he spent a lot of time on the DL when the team needed him the most and they put fan-favorite Nava back to AAA to make room for his worthless ass.
