  1. 1. How should the Red Sox handle David Ortiz's contract situation?

    • They should give him an multi-year extension
      3
    • They should pick up his one year option
      8
    • They should let him walk at season's end

"I don't want one year. Why should I return for one year and go through the same stuff I'm going through now, just because it's my last year? No. I like to be left alone when I'm playing baseball. I know how to clean my stuff up.'' - Ortiz

I think his second-half will determine whether they pick up his option or let him walk but he definitely isn't getting an extension.

There's a simple solution here. Give him a one year contract with vesting extensions. If the extensions have reasonable requirements, his ego will push him to sign the contract because he believes he can make them, but if he falls apart the team can get rid of him. If he doesn't want that, let the rest of the market remind him how much money aging sluggers with no defensive position and consistency concerns will make.

Do you have a source for this quote?

Sometimes it's time to say enough.

I don't think that time should come after a .945 OPS season.

I don't like his quote about not wanting to come back for one year. Obviously he'd like the security of a multi-year deal but he agreed to a contract which stipulates the Sox hold an option for the 2011 season. Considering he'll be 35, making $12.5 mil may not be such a bad thing.

Ortiz can want all he likes, but in the end the most he is looking at is a 2 year guaranteed contract. Possibly the Twins on a 2 year deal at 7 or 8M per.

Pick up his extension and see if he can do this again next year. If you extend him you lose out of big free agent power hitters like Gonzalez and Fielder, or even Dunn. I know 12.5 is expensive for a 35 year old DH, but its better and safer than tying him up for the long run. I'm assuming Ortiz will have a decent enough second half to put up 30 homers and 100 RBI and be deserving of consideration of being brought back.

it all depends on the second half

If he keeps his current pace up ,the FO would probly give him 2 + an option

If he stinks in the second half , then he's gone

I don't go over 2 years for a 35+ year old overweight slugger unless the deal is somehow easy to get out of. The risk is bigger than the reward

I can't imagine them doing anything proactive to get him. I would be surprised if they picked up his (expensive) option, and I would be surprised if that didn't make him test FA. The Sox would probably make a very efficient offer and he might go elsewhere. I wouldn't blame them for not wanting to touch him with a 10 foot pole, unless he wants to stay with them on his own dollar.

I don't trust any of this stuff. If he had never had the slump the first half of 2009 and first month of 2010 then I would probably be all for it, but now I've seen what bad can look like for him and it isn't pretty. It isn't worth the risk and this FO is fresh from Mike Lowell's contract. Ortiz will want security, they will want minimal risk. It doesn't feel like a good match.

Which is a pity, because it's a safe bet that the big man has 2 years of usefulness left in him, but taking that chance for large money over a 3 year extension isn't smart. The team needs to move away from the last of its 2004 core anyway now that it's 6 years later and they're all in their mid to late 30's they might as well go looking for a new DH.

I expect Varitek to have his Evans-with-the-Orioles year next year as well FWIW. That will be the last of them gone.

My guess is that JD Drew will be our DH next year by the ASB. Kalish is killing the ball in Pawtucket and is beginning to look a bit ready-ish. Slotting Drew in at DH would keep him in the lineup more often, although I doubt he'll like the idea much it's still sound in principle.
