There were a few of us yesterday who wanted to get value from VMart/Beltre while the team can. The team has a lot of young stars' date=' so protecting this team's future is worth far more to me than making the playoffs and losing the first round.[/quote']

In fairness, that was mostly just me and I'm insane, so... you know...

It doesn't change the fact that this is a team with a core of players in their prime, trailing behind the two best teams in the mlb. This team has enough low-level prospects-- trading those guys would be worth more than the draft picks.

Martinez is definitely part of the future already (at least the next 3+ years). I can't see them not resigning him. Beltre's future with the team is questionable but he's one of the best hitters on the team and we need him to make a run this year.

At this point, I don't think there's anything left to add except a bullpen arm. Unless the Sox wanted to get Ianetta and let Martinez go (not a great option). I don't know whether Theo will trade for bullpen help though, the FO seemed pretty enthused about Bowden and might give him another look.

We thought the same thing about Jason Bay.

Well, Lackey was a bit of a surprise given that the Sox had 3 pitchers with ace potential/ability. If Lackey hadn't arrived, I think we'd be complaining about Bay's cold streak this season.

all the sox really need is a bullpen arm, anything else would be a luxury. in the offseason they can focus on stuff like trying to acquire ianetta and possibly trading for a big bat to take the place of ortiz. but they don't really have major holes to fill other than middle relief, left field and backup catcher and 2 of those 3 will be addressed by players returning from the dl

if we were out of the playoff hunt i'd agree. but we're well within striking distance of a playoff spot with more than 1/3 of the season to go. we have one of the best offenses in baseball and one of the most dominant 1-2 punches in our rotation. if we get to the playoffs, we're going to be tough. our roster is built for a deep playoff run

I don't know if he's that much of a guarantee to be on the team after the season. Especially if he hits the open market. I don't see the Sox exceeding something like 3-4 years at 10M per. And I'm pretty sure someone will top that. Especially the Mets. He's going to have to really want to stay in Boston for him to be here going forward.

Not necessarily. If the Sox bring back Martinez and let Beltre walk, they can trade for Ianetta and move V-Mart to 1B and Youk to 3B. But I think that's more of a plan B. Plan A is probably acquire a premiere 1B(Fielder for example).

I've never really liked Iannetta, I'm just not sure why. I don't think that his power is as great as it's rated (probably because he plays in Coors) and he's never been able to hit for good average in the big leagues, despite doing so in the minors. Not that I wouldn't mind him as a backup catcher.

Third base?

The second year of Beltre's deal is based on a player option. NWIH he sticks around. He's a Boras client, he WILL test the waters of FA.

So unless you're pencilling in Jed Lowrie as next year's starting 3B, we have an issue here.

EDIT: Oh I see, you meant short-term, my bad.

I heard the red sox need a OF...Austin Kearns.

So he's a right handed left fielder hitting .270 with a .740 ops? How is he different than Darnell McDonald?

Yeah, I'm using the original trade deadline thread. That's right.

This is the quietest Sox deadline that I can remember. There are usually a rumor or two, or at least a targeted player. This year it doesn't seem like there is. There's certainly no Roy Halladay out there, and I don't think there's even a V-Mart-type who has a slim chance of being acquired by the Sox. The closest player to that caliber is probably Adam Dunn, but the Sox don't have any need for him.

They are always aggressive at the deadline, but I'm having a hard time seeing anything significant happening.

Same here, especially when Toronto makes absurd demands for their relievers. I'm all for getting some bullpen help, but not when it comes at that cost.

The Sox continue to make numerous calls on several relievers including MIlwaukee's Trevor Hoffman. A major league source confirmed tonight that the team indeed did make a call on Hoffman, who has pitched very well lately, unscored upon in his last six outings and has allowed only three runs in his last 16 appearances with 14 strikeouts and only two walks.

Please God, no. Just no. I wouldn't take Trevor Hoffman if his price tag was a ham sandwich.

What they're looking for is to deal someone totally insignificant for lightning in a bottle. I agree with you that Hoffman isn't a very good pitcher, but neither is anyone else they could get for virtually nothing.

Hell, Wilson Ramos was dealt for Matt Capps (who was having a good year, but seriously Matt Capps?) Toronto wanted Kelly or Iglesias from the Sox for Downs, and Montero from the Yankees. It seems like the price for bullpen arms is really high this deadline, and the price for ace pitchers a lot lower than people thought it'd be.

It's all about the contract. The relievers arent signed for big coin, so the prospect load will be higher. Oswalt and Haren had a lot of money left, so the prospect packs were less and Lee was pretty cheap and needed his whole contract paid to get Smoak

Just whatever you do, Theo don't get fooled by Farnsworth. He'll return to his career numbers soon enough.

Ramos for Capps was an awful trade. I know they didn't need Ramos, but a top Catching prospect for a RP? lol If that's the market for RP, then I hope the Sox stay clear of it.

Jackson will be part of a deal for Dunn. I'll be surprised if they keep him.

I don't think so. Buster Olney was saying that those rumours had no truth to them, and that the Nationals would not take Edwin Jackson for Adam Dunn.

Twins should have gone after Haren. If you are gonna give Ramos up, make it for something worthwhile, and they need starting pitching.

It will be Jackson+ if a deal goes down.

Iread the Sox asked the Brewers about Edmonds. Thoughts everyone?

Posted
Edmonds would be a good bench bat. He probably isnt a guy whose health will allow him to start, but he'd provide some thunder from the bench. If he comes cheap, then he is an improvement

Yawn re: Edmonds.

If those are the rumors at this stage in the game then we're clearly looking at a very low-key trade deadline.

With Berkman in NY and with the Rays being active in every rumor, this has the makings of a "give-up" kind of deadline for the sox.
