Fielder was the name I was using because he is most talked about. He probably isn't my first choice either. He has to show he can drop some weight. I have the same concerns as you about him eating his way out of the league.

With the Padres success I don't see Agon being available this off season. They are gonna try and go again next year no matter what happens this year. He will only become available if they fall out next season.

Outside of those 2 I'm not sure who else there is to realistically dangle Ellsbury+prospects for.

Good point. Maybe Derek Lee or Aramis Ramirez? Mark Reynolds?

The problem is that they won't ever have enough money to sign Adrian no matter what happens. San Diego has a very apathetic fan base and even a nice playoff run wouldn't bring much of a spike in attendance. If they trade him in the off-season, they can get more for him than they could if they waited until the trade deadline.

I think Lee is a free agent this offseason, and is notoriously streaky in even a hitter's park (Wrigley).

And I still think the Padres would demand Kalish rather than Ellsbury.

No Ellsbury doesn't really work for the Padres. I still expect a lot of "Ellsbury" discussions this off season.

But we really should change the venue for that discussion. We are just mucking up the BP thread nw :D

i've said this before but some proponents for trading ellsbury haven't acknowledged it. why would a small market team want a player like ellsbury who will be going to arbitration the next 3 years and then will be a free agent when they could acquire multiple other players who are both cost controlled and under team control long term instead?

This team has a LOT of work to do on the bullpen. The only "safe" arm I see is Bard (yes, I'm excluding Paps, he's already lost his elite status and I think it's only going to continue downhill).

Need to reevaluate the pen, definitely.

Need to overreact to one year from any relief pitcher, definitely *not*

Its not overreacting. His stats have been on the decline for a while. I think he has too much pride to realize that he needs to develop a second pitch, and that's a serious problem, especially with a moron like Farrell as a pitching coach.

On the decline does not mean bad. I'd take what Papelbon is doing even with all the hiccups right now over more than half of the other closers in the league.

When people are up in arms that their closer has "only" a 137 ERA+, that's silly.

Before the game, when asked about not using Manny Delcarmen Saturday, Red Sox manager Terry Francona said he didn’t want the reliever to face Michael Young and Josh Hamilton, both of whom have hit Delcarmen in the past. So it was curious when, in the seventh inning of yesterday’s game, Francona summoned Delcarmen to face — you guessed it — Young and Hamilton.

Given what transpired, Francona probably should have stuck with his initial instincts. With one run already having scored in the inning on a bunt single against Daisuke Matsuzaka, Delcarmen entered with two men on and Young at the plate and the Sox down by two runs.

Get this giant of a pussy off this team.

Is there a point to have this guy around if he can't handle pressure for a team that is expected to compete?

What a pussy.

I get so tired of "mediocre player X is a woman" and all the vulgar variations thereof So very, very tired.

This kind of insult is so old and well-chewed that it appears numerous times in the bible. If it was ever funny, which it isn't but if it was, it must have been thousands of years ago. Is changing it up and showing a bit of creativity in your thoughtless knee-jerk insults all that much to ask? Can't you at least come up with some other cheap shot?

Has anyone else noticed that Okijima has rebounded a little bit to put up numbers that are no longer in the horrid category? His trend is that he is fading fast, but still kudos to him for making a comeback at the end of the season.

What are your preferred insulting terms? I like stinks, bum, bag of trash. I can keep going but I don't have the time right now.

I'd rather describe the guy than insult him. Wasting your vitriol on a baseball player is pointless when that ballplayer doesn't read the site. If a guy's a scrub, call him a scrub. If you don't like his effort level, call him on it. But this whole thing where you all swap the same insult around over and over again until everyone believes it whether it's true or not just is not my scene.
