5.0IP 5 hits 4 walks 2 runs 6k

He didn't quite have the control tonite, but he kept them in the game.

Considering that Doubront went 5 IP with 3 runs, Dice-k is still the best solution for that 4th spot right, and I don't see him giving up more than 3 runs in a game with the way he's pitched this season.

First day back from injury I write Daisuke a mulligan for the 5 innings thing and the outing was otherwise respectable.

Unless a Yankee pitcher (like Javy Vasquez) was the one pitching. Then the "respectability" would be much easier to find.

He could gone the 6th if his pitch count didn't run up in the first and the Scoot error. Though he was at around 100 pitch he could gone back out there.

What happened last night? 105 pitches and out after 6? I hope not. Maybe he got into trouble in the 7th.The BP really sucked in Colorado. Tito could have 10 guys in the BP, and they'd all get 60 appearances. Too much BP. And I don't mean oil.

Well, that's the mentality these days. Counting pitches. The way to get an effective pitcher out of the game, and get to that crummy BP. Just have your hitters take a lot of pitches.

How many times do I have to say it? Stats like base runners and walk percentages are worthless with a guy like Dice-k. Argue what you will about WHIP with any other player but Dice-k is an exception to the rule. I believe its skill, but some believe its his luck. Either way, he consistently gets out of situations with runners on.

The stats that matters for him are runs(not ER) and IP. 2 runs is great. 5 innings is lacking, but he did just get off the DL afterall.

Point out where i said it was a respectable outing?

What i was pointing out is Jacko's eagerness to jump all over Dice-K when, just as ORS said, he always has a silver lining when it comes to Yankee players, or am i incorrect?

The fact is, it wasn't a respectable outing, but it was passable for a guy coming off the DL (saying he wasn't injured when you have no proof other than "I think i heard it on WEEI is nothing but conjecture), there are other ways to express things without coming off as biased, but hey, what do i know, i fight with everyone! (But bias escapes me).

Dissapointed in you BSN07, since you seemed to not read the post.

I am sure BSN is crushed at your disappointment. You never said it was good, but you jumped on me for pointing it out, as usual. Regardless, I see you toned it down a bit of late, but you just cannot resist and soon you'll be back fighting as usual. Maybe even tonight?

Dipre's right... Jacko does always find a silver lining for Yankee players.

Like, Burnett sucks. But he'll reel off a string of 9 straight starts of dominance as soon as we write him off. Kinda stuff Jacko says.

Plus Jacko almost seems giddy to see the Red Sox drop off from the injuries. Before that we weren't worrying him ("least concerning Red Sox team since 2004") or Clay was due for dropoff or our offense was overachieving or we weren't making the playoffs anyway so all this doesn't matter. Something like that.

He continues his string of pretty much pitching well every other start. Once Beckett and Clay our back, I can live with that from Dice-K as the 5

Dice-K is about the level of Wakefield--at four times the salary.

Sort of.

The nature of a knuckleballer is that you either make the batters look foolish or you get bombed. He is what he is.

Dice-K, on the other hand, is said to have all the tools to be a top of the rotation guy. With all the money the Sox ahve sunk into him, he's more than a dissapointntment.

As far as what to expect from each of his starts, well, just lower your expectations and you won't be surprised.

He sucks.

Dice-k had a big game last night

6.2 IP, 1 ER, .6 WHIP, QS, W. He really only made only one or two bad pitches all night.

If you look at his last seven starts, 5 of them are quality starts, and he only gave up a total of 6 runs in the other two starts. Considering his tendency to go sub 6 innings, 5/7 QS for him is a very good sign. He's quietly having a fairly good season, and as scary as it may sound, right now he's the team's 2nd best starter.

I really hope this team can hang around long enough to really benefit from a Lester-Buchholz-Beckett-Lackey-DiceK rotation with a healthier offense

To the anti-Dice-K club of this forum: I'm really surprised and disappointed at you folks. The Sox had just lost the last 2 games to a mediocre team and you still haven't found a reason to blame Dice-K for these losses. What's up with that?

And to all you suggesting Dice-K be traded, I'd say go ahead. There'd be a number of teams lining up to acquire him.

I posted this in a GT, but I figured I'd recycle it for some food for thought.

I did some math, and this is what I came up with for 2007-2010. I think this is about right.

Dice-k 44-24, 509.1 IP, 4.05 ERA, 5.92 IP per start, 474 K, 8.5 K/9, WHIP 1.38

Beckett 50-24, 638.2 IP, 3.95 ERA, 6.52 IP per start, 610 k, 8.6 K/9, WHIP 1.21

The only significant difference is WHIP, IP per start, and wins-- although Dice had fewer IP because of WHIP, and might have had more wins if he stayed later into games. So it really just comes down to IP. I also ignored Beckett's mediocre 2006 numbers.
