I wonder how much Harper will sign for...Boras did say he wants Harper to sign for more $ than Strasburg.

Harper has less leverage than he thinks. By making himself draft eligible this early, it's pretty obvious that he has no intention of going to college after the draft. My guess is that Harper signs for $10 million.

Draft by need and signability.

You typically dont draft for need in the baseball draft, unless you are hopelessly stacked at one position and you are looking at a player who can only play that one position. Most teams select based on the best player available on their board. At the same time, there needs to be some strategy involved. The cubs just took a player who wasnt slated to go until the 3rd or 4th round. Unless they knew someone else was on him, they reached and missed a chance at another solid player at that slot.

Yeah but you usually don't get the Evan Longorias and David Prices of the world with an 18th pick. Which is why Harper is a Natinal.

I am talking about the best player available when your pick comes about. Unless there is a tie on your board, you take best player. This is not the NFL or NBA draft where position is vital.

You typicall don't, but i was talking specifically about the Rangers. From what i've heard, they've soured on Borbon, and they were dead set on picking up a coachable, speedy, good-D CF early in the draft, which is what they did.

It wasn't directed at you, but at Y228.

Haha I know, just giving credit where credit is due. They've been helped out this decade by having very high draft picks, but I also really think they know what they're doing.

They may have soured on Borbon. But I can guarantee you that Borbon's situation has nothing to do with this pick. Even if Skole reaches all of his potential, he doesnt reach the bigs for 3-5 yrs. That POV would make sense if they picked a college kid who could make it to the bigs in 1-2 yrs. But this kid is a major project. You dont draft a project with an eye for the now.

Skole had more to do with the fact that it was a compensation pick from not signing Purke last yr. Skole is a guy who will sign for slot, which the Rangers needed to keep an eye on. If they dont sign Skole, they lose that pick

Which is why they have a scouting team. They probably see something that you don't, because they have all of the resources, time and knowledge to dedicate to the scouting of players.

Every team has a score of scouts. That isnt the point. There has to be a strategy, since drafting a guy who looks like he wont go until the 4th round or so in the first is a reach. Meaning, you had the chance to get someone else PLUS that guy. Regardless, I think their situation is unique since it was a comp pick

Again, there has to be something they see that we don't. Maybe a combination of need plus talent.

I think the Red Sox took a safer pick here since they had the #36 and #39 which can cash in on dropped players.

From what I am hearing from some of the scout.com guys, Ranaudo will likely fall into the supp round and is not a target for NY unless their top targets fall off the board in succession. Doesnt sound like NY wants to go with another injury project like Brackman

If Zach Cox or Asher Wojciechowski drop to 32, is there any chance the Yankees pass and go with one of the guys that they have been linked to?

I would love Zach Cox. Wojo is on the Yankee board pretty highly as well. But I am hearing that Yelich is their pick right now

I keep hearing Vettleson. What do you think?
