He broke 4 ribs anteriorly and 1 rib posteriorly. He's gonna feel it for a long time. Some people still have some discomfot for yrs. Once they heal, though, he wont have to worry about reinjuring it. He'll just need to tolerate the pain

tito just announced that ellsbury's hitting leadoff tonight and scutato's batting second. i don't like scutaro batting second at all, i'd rather have lowrie bat there until pedroia comes back

Ellsbury trade talk was getting a nice discussion in the BP thread. Thought it be better to continue it here.

As I said earlier, I expect a lot of talk concerning Ellsbury this offseason. Even with the injury this season, he still will have a lot of value IMO.

Now I brought up Matt Kemp's name before the TDL. I see this as a possible match. Kemp needs a change of scenery. He is losing favor in that organization quickly. And the once mad idea of trading him doesn't seem as wacked as it did before.

An Ellsbury for Kemp deal seems reasonable. It could work out very well on each side. Kemp gets his change. Boston gets a potential power threat from the RH side. LA gets rid of a player that seemingly didn't want to be there. Plus replace him with a young ML tested player.

Talk I expect to see. Action I don't.

I won't mind at all if he's in the OF next season. Just saying the idea of trading him seems more plausible now.

I don't see Ellsbury in the long range picture here. Not with the development of Kalish. Ellsbury started digging his own grave here when he changed agents--to Boras--a couple of years ago. That was a sign that maybe he was prematurely overrating himself. Those type often never improve to the next level, needed to get the big contract. Though having Boras almost assures that he will be overpaid. Look at the kind of money Boras has stolen from the Dodgers for Manny.

Another guy who is a goner is Papelbon. He will want more than he is worth at this point. And Bard is waiting in the wings to take over as closer. You don't think Bard wants to set up another year, do you?

Ellsbury is gonna be much better off with Boras than anyone else. He is not the kind of player that lasts long term. He's one dimensional, and once the legs start to slow down, so will his performance. I agree with the sentiment on here. He'll be dealt eventually, but the sox would be crazy to deal him now

Ellsbury was pretty elite last year. I wouldn't be surprised if you take Carl Crawford's contract, take off like $3-5M total and end up at Ellsbury's contract.

Matt Kemp for Ellsbury is a really enticing trade. He's had high BABIP's the past two years, and a lower one this year, but maybe that's sustainable given his great line drive rate and speed. I'd imagine it would take more than Ellsbury to swing Kemp over, unless there's serious discontent (i.e. how Manny was viewed by Boston).

Why? If it's the right deal. His trade value is not at it's peak. But it's not too far down the mountain.

i don't see us signing him to a 10 year contract so i don't think we have to worry about what happens when his legs slow down

It sounds like a JD Drew injury to me. The team was up six runs, and he felt sore, so he gave himself the night off. Soreness doesn't mean re-broken ribs, so while he may be day-to-day, I doubt he'll go to the DL.

Why? Because Adrian Beltre broke his ribs in a head-on collision?

Guy's hurt, he's hurt, you can't just "grit, guts and glory" yourself out of broken ribs. And the healing process there is slow and there can be many setbacks -- heck, if your ribs are cracked sneeze too hard you can get set back to square one.

I mean, if it was a bruise or a sprain, sure, I might be right there with you, but calling a guy's toughness into question for not playing through injury when he's got broken ribs is ridiculous

yeah, it's one thing if he was hurt on a routine basis but this is a guy who started 153 games last year and stole 70 bases. he doesn't have a history of injury, in fact i think it's safe to say that he's usually pretty durable

the red sox are a much better team with ellsbury thant they are without him

As an aside, Ellsbury has just been incredibly unlucky. He takes a knee to the ribs while he is outstretched from a guy who is all muscle. Then he slides on it then collides with a pitcher and lands on the area. The sox need to shut him down for the yr and let it completely heal. The last thing you need is for this to linger into 2011

Indeed.

Learn the lesson of Mike Lowell. If you've got a guy that's hurt, let him take care of the injury, 2 years of all but complete uselessness could have been averted if Mike hadn't aggravated his injury by trying to play third base on it every day for a month.

We expected too much of Ellsbury. He's not going to steal 70 every year, much less hit for power or get on base at .400. As long as he gets on base average to above average, flashes his speed when it's important, and plays solid defense we really need to be OK with him being more "really fine bread-and-butter CF" and less "awesome superstar."
