They've had a bad run of injuries the last few years (especially pitchers) with Slowey going down with a 10-3 record last year, Pat Neshek in '08, Morneau last fall, and now Nathan. It happens, but if any team can bounceback after losing players via trade/injury, it would be the Twins.

They need to look at their coaching and training staffs and their manager's approach, like the Sox had to do in 2006. This many different kinds of pitchers' arm injuries don't happen in a vacuum.

I think it will hurt and take away from some wins but their offense has improved and maybe they won't have to use a closer. lol. Bullpen by committee.

We saw this firsthand in '03' date=' but that never works.[/quote']

I know thats why there was a lol. But it was unclear. It never works but if thats all you got. Without Nathan I don't see them as much as a threat even though Mauer-Morneau-Thome-Cuddyer is a good punch for them.

Don't forget Liriano.

Without Nathan, they pull from a pretty strong middle relief to fill the void. With their rotation being average at best, they will rely on that middle relief to fill the void. And with Nathan down, it is gonna be a weaker spot than it was in the past. Losing elite closers is not something to shrug off as nothing.

Joe Nathan has decided to have Tommy John surgery, which will cost him his 2010 season.

As hopeful as the news had been lately, this was always the most likely outcome. Nathan told reporters that his elbow felt stiff during the much-anticipated game of catch he had with pitching coach Rick Anderson on Sunday. He will miss 2010 but should be back around this time next year, assuming all goes according to plan with his ulnar collateral ligament replacement surgery. The Twins have already been linked to Jason Frasor and Heath Bell, so be prepared for those rumors to begin in earnest.
