Lars Anderson is quickly climbing up in the list 'Prospects we hold on to too long' - should be right after Craig Hansen.

And to clarify that statement before i get more guns pointed at me than a White dude with a Slayer shirt in Compton, there are numerous issues with leaving out any of the projected four bench members (Hermida, Hall, Lowell, Varitek) for a guy like Tug Hulett or whoever else might be considered.

You leave out Hall, you don't have another righty OF besides Cameron, not to mention a true utility player, you leave Lowell, you don't have a righty power bat in case Ortiz stinks up the joint versus lefties, leave Hermida out, you're missing on both his potential and don't have a true fourth OF, and Varitek for the obvious reasons.

Not a knock on Hulett, but the Sox bench, as currently constructed, seems like a very big strength, and messing with it might not be a good idea.

I dont think Lowell is a lock to be on the bench. Right now just about every news source is saying that he will be showcased this spring to be traded.

I'm willing to bet dollars to doughnuts that he stays with the team. I have no way to confirm it, but i have a gut about it. Feel free to rub my face in it if he gets traded.

I thought he was for sure going to be traded before season - but now after the first look on Ortiz - I think we should hang on to Lowell at least till trade deadlines.

Ortiz has taken 14 AB in ST. 14 AB's. He's a question mark for sure, but come on.

The real reason why the Sox should kee,p Lowell around is not only as Ortiz protection, but because for what they'd probably end up getting back for him after his latest surgery, they're better off keeping him. They can get him a significant number of AB's if he's healthy. Specially if he shows he can play some 1st base. Then he really becomes an asset.

Lol.

Why, yes.

The kid has the tools but may not have the drive and commitment.

Oh well.

Why? The only guy he has to beat to crack the roster is Bill Hall. We wouldn't miss him for a second.

Whoa easy there. Ive never had fight with you on this board, so why start now?

I just think its better off for him to be traded to a team that would give him a guaranteed season's worth of starting. Rather him being a bench/role player

Bill Hall is a RHH who can play the OF. It's really that simple.

Because you're one of the few who hasn't fought him yet, so he's looking for another check mark in his internet fighting resume.

Seriously though, I agree that it would be best for Lowell if he were traded and got more playing time, and I think it would be best for the team if we traded Lowell depending on the package we got in return. Otherwise, since we would have to eat a lot of money to trade him and barring the presence of a worthy package, we would lose very little by keeping him in case Ortiz goes belly up. Either way, there is a lot of sunk $$ on our roster.

So is Mike Cameron. What's your point?

Finding a RHH platoon OF, if we figure we need one, is not that difficult. Neither Drew nor Ellsbury struggles particularly much against LHP.

I never said anything about fighting. What i meant was that if Lowell was traded he could certainly call me out on it and i wouldn't be offended, which is exactly the opposite of the way you guys took it.

Let's say the bench is Hermida, Hulett, Lowell, and Varitek, if they carry 12 pitchers, how do you fit 26 players into a 25-man roster?

Not to mention overall, Hall is a better player and better fit than Hulett, and it's really not debatable.

Better fit, sure in theory, although every role Hall covers could be covered by someone else we already have on the roster. Better player, only if you think the world ended in 2008.

A 4 man bench is par for the course -- are we starting 10 position players for any reason?

C: Tek, Martinez (2)

1B: Youkilis (1+2=3)

IF: Pedroia, Hulett/Hall, Lowell, Beltre, Scutaro,(3+5=8)

OF: Hermida, Ellsbury, Cameron, Drew (8+4=12)

DH: Ortiz (12+1=13)

+ 12 pitchers = 25

since Ellsbury can back up CF, and so, in theory, can Drew, Hall isn't strictly necessary, and Hulett allows for the same infield flexibility we actually need Hall for.

Honestly, I'm rooting for Lowrie, not Hulett, but the fact is it could work.

Let's analyze this point by point:

First, your math is wrong.

1B: Youkilis (1+2=3)

IF: Pedroia, Hulett/Hall, Lowell, Beltre, Scutaro,(3+5=8)

OF: Hermida, Ellsbury, Cameron, Drew+ RHH OF you mentioned in your previous post (8+5=13)

DH: Ortiz (13+1=14)

+ 12 pitchers = 26

since Ellsbury can back up CF, and so, in theory, can Drew, Hall isn't strictly necessary, and Hulett allows some infield flexibility we don't have with Hall.

Can you give me one logical reason why you would consider Tug Hulett a better Major Leaguer than Bill Hall?

Hall has better positional flexibility.

Hall has a lot more ML experience, and of course, better stats than Hulett's SSS.

Hall is a pull-happy RHH at Fenway.

Honestly' date=' I'm rooting for Lowrie, not Hulett, but the fact is it could work.[/quote']

Lowrie, if healthy, on the other hand, batting switchie and being able to provide above-average D at three IF positions would be a whole other beast. But we all know about the enormous IF his health entails. He may de-throne Hall by mid-season, but he's not breaking camp with the team, he needs to play everyday in the minors and show he's healthy.

Looks like Westmoreland is running into some health problems.

FORT MYERS, FL- Red Sox minor league outfielder Ryan Westmoreland has been diagnosed with a cavernous malformation in his brain and has taken medical leave from minor league camp to seek treatment. General Manager Theo Epstein made the announcement.

“The entire Red Sox organization stands in support of Ryan as he courageously deals with this issue,” Epstein said. “Ryan is a remarkable kid and a talented player, and we understand that many will be concerned about his health. He is getting the best medical attention the world has to offer, and we will have more information soon. Until then -- out of respect for Ryan’s privacy and at the request of the Westmoreland family -- we will not have any further comment.”

Westmoreland, 19, left minor league camp on Thursday, March 4th. He was diagnosed on Friday, March 5th at Massachusetts General Hospital, had consultations with three leading experts in the field, and on Tuesday will have surgery with Dr. Robert Spetzler of the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, AZ.

The Red Sox ask that members of the media please respect Ryan’s privacy and honor the Westmorelands’ request that they not be contacted until later in Ryan’s recovery.

I said "if" we need a platoon RHH OF. Which of Drew or Ellsbury is going to be sitting for Hall on a regular basis? Hopefully neither, since Drew nor Ellsbury has particular trouble dealing with lefthanded pitching and Hall isn't that good.

I honestly think we're set in the OF. With Ellsbury and Drew both able in theory to back up CF, Hermida's all the OF backup you need unless you have injuries, and that's what guys like Reddick and Kalish are doing in Pawtucket.

Shocker.

This is why, if you can bring in Gonzalez and Westmoreland is one of the pieces going the other way, you take that.

Unless San Diego also wants a s*** load in addition to Westmoreland. Then you tell them to go f**** themselves and enjoy last place and little fans.

I think Hall's getting AB's at RF when the matchup is against a particularly tough lefty. Hermida is not good against LHP, which is why Hall's ability to play the OF is very important.

Hermida lifetime vs LHP: .697 OPS

Hall lifetime vs LHP: .810 OPS.

If Drew goes down for some time, then you have the perfect platoon in Hermida/Hall. And Drew's gonna go down for some time, and half the board's gonna go apeshit about it.
