With his height and size' date=' he could have afforded to gain the weight.[/quote']He was bound to fill out. For a young guy like him, it should not be a problem as long as he keeps his legs strong.

How's your weather there? We got more snow on LI today. I am really sick of this stuff.

I hear ya. Clay was a bean pole, will be interesting to see how different he looks with the additional lbs.

Sunny and 40 today, feels like Summer. I know what you mean about the snow. We've had 4 snow storms since December, I'm done. It rained yesterday. Hang in there.

I pitcher doesn't need to be cut and have 0 percent body fat. It's not good for your stamina.

Having some fat reserves(in a healthy way, not Curt Schilling fat reserves) should help him across a full season of pitching. Besides a lot of the guys lose 10+ pounds during the course of the season anyways.

I saw his interview yesterday. He has a paunch! Otherwise he looks the same.

He credits his wife for the gain in weight. He also said he has no confidence that he'll be able to keep the weight on when the workouts begin.

Uggh, I know it's not what you meant, but please don't use those words in that order when talking about Buchholz. I'm already nervous about his confidence and I didn't need the incremental blood pressure rise before I finished parsing the sentence.

Seconded. Scared me a bit as well.

Not a direct quote. He's a s*** kicker from Texas. He does not know many multi-syllabic words so it's kind of obvious that I was paraphrasing what he said.

It was more like "well ya know with all the sun and all I'm gonna loose it runnin around down here".

Sound plausible?

Boston.com had the entire interview (about 7 minutes) on video yesterday.

So much for all of our pitching depth. The season hasn't even started, and Dice K is already whining. This might be why he recently broke training and left the training facility. If we get a couple of injuries to the pitching staff, this team will have a tough job making the playoffs, because it doesn't have the offense to overcome it.

Its not like they will have moved from 4th best offense to Kansas City Royal/San Diego Padre type offense. I love Jason Bay, but his loss is not as big as St Louis losing Pujols. Jacoby looks to improve on his obp while hitting close to .300, maybe setting his sights on more SBs, and add some more pop as he nears his prime. Pedroia should give the same .300 avg, 15-20 HR, 75+RBI, 15-20 SB season. V-Mart will hit around .300, 20+ HRs, 100+ RBIs. This will be the year that Youk reaches 30 HRs (his injury time in April was only reason he didnt have a 30/100 season)

Ortiz should have a more consistent year. However if he has the same two month slump, Sox wont be so nice again to keep giving him ABs. Give them a lil push to call up San Diego perhaps, or work out a trade for a power guy whose in his contract year. Yes Beltre and Cameron will both hit at least .240, but theyre both good to put up 20-25 HR, 75+ RBI type seasons while putting up highlight reel plays. Drew will have his typical .265 avg/20 +/- HRs, 65+ RBIs season. Hard to gauge Scutaro, because he didnt get playing time until he neared his mid 30s. I would gather something like .275, 10 HRs, 50+RBIs, 10 SBs

The bench is also a considerable offensive upgrade. Going from Kottaras, Kotsay, Lowrie, and train wreck that is Baldelli to... Varitek, Hall (not that long ago he had 30 HRs, so hello green monster), Hermida, and Im still hoping they add Jonny Gomes

If the starting pitching goes than this team is screwed, we don't have the offense to bail us out. Dice-K is already complaining that he is hurt and ST hasn't even started. Hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come for him this season. Looks like we may not have to worry about pleasing Wakefield after all. Then he'll get hurt too and we will back to calling up guys like Tazawa and Bowden from Triple A again. Oh wait, we got Boof Bonser!

RS -- they're more likely to bring in Russel Branyan last I'd heard. I'll take Branyan over Gomes.

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, free agent first baseman Russell Branyan is deciding between the Guardians and Rays.

The Rays are likely to contend for a division championship this season, but the Guardians can probably offer the larger chunk of playing time. The 34-year-old batted .251/.347/.520 with 31 homers and 86 RBI last season for the Mariners. He's hoping for a major league contract.

And Ill hold my breath to worry that the season is over just because of Dice-K. Its Feb 17, still 6 weeks away from season opener. It is so rare when teams dont have injuries to their starting five. As long as its a minor set back, not that big of a deal. I kind of like he was working too hard than he was last offseason... when he was watching soaps and eating bon bons

Any team who experiences major difficulties with its Starting Pitching is screwed, regardless of its offensive firepower.

I disagreed with that right from the beginning. Who turned out to be right? We ended up sending some rancid trash to the mound on a fairly regular basis in the second half. This year I think the pitching is deeper than last year, but an injury or two and we could be watching a parade of bums again. I have no confidence that Wakefield can stay in the rotation for the entire year at his age and with his physical injuries. We need the 5 starters including Dice K to remain healthy and productive.

Daisuke's expected to be ready for the regular season, I wouldn't panic yet. Pitchers tend to be sore in spring training.

Anything can happen, but on paper we have one of the deepest pitching staffs in baseball.

Dice-K will be ready for the start of the season. Wakefield probably will break down at some point and need some time off during the season. Someone else will have soreness that needs to be rested or a pulled groin or a blister and miss a start. It's why the truest adage in baseball is "you can't have too much pitching". The Sox pitching staff is deep. Many here have a far darker view of our offense than I do.

I think our starting pitching is top-notch - maybe the best in the AL, our hitting above average, our defense will be in the top 3 in the AL and our bullpen - ok, maybe a problem, have to wait and see. This is a good team and I'm expecting another 95+ season.

Guys, every spring training there are a list of bumps and bruises (and sore backs). It's fine, nothing new here and injuries are a part of the game. There will be many this season and we'll cope. Even with re-tread starting pitchers last year the Sox won 95 and made it to the post-season. I wanted more but that doesn't exactly suck.
