Phillies Acquire Halladay; Send Lee to Mariners

I think Seattle is for some reason the sub story here but from what I know they came out on top with this trade because now they have a double barrel Ace at the top of the rotation in a pitchers park.

They sign Bay and they could be really be cooking with gas

As part of the deal, Halladay would agree to a three-year extension through 2013, with a vesting option that could lengthen the deal by another year or two, one source said. The extension is expected to guarantee Halladay in the neighborhood of $60 million, plus the $15.75 million he would make in 2010, the final year of his current contract.

Was definitely expecting somewhere in the 4-5 year range

The M's are really pushing to become a the best team in the West. The have a great top two, and Lee is def. the best pitcher in this deal. However, I don't think they will be able to sign him, he is gonna want a lot of money. If the Phillies will give Hallday a 3 year 20 million per year extension, imagine what Lee wants per year. They had of traded Lee b/c they felt they couldn't sign him past this year b/c they couldn't afford him. Obviously the wanted to get an ace in return that would be locked up. Hallday is. What kind of money is Cliff Lee looking for though? With the Angels losing an ace, and their 3B, they really could be out of the playoff hunt going into next year. If the M's sign Bay, wow, what a friggin offseaon. Good to see Halladay out of the AL East.

How is Lee better than Halladay? :dunno:

Just looking at his second half last year and playoffs was amazing. Granted he did that in the NL, but still its awesome. Both guys are on the same level, but the M's make out in the deal b/c of that one two combo + the possibility of signing both Figgins and Bay. The Phillies get an ace locked up for a long time, but I imagine fans would have preferred if Hamels could have been traded and Lee could have been locked up

None of those points indicate that Lee is the better pitcher, just that Seattle benefits most from the deal, which I agree with. But I have a hard time saying that any pitcher in baseball right now is better than Halladay. He's going to DOMINATE the National League.

All I know is that if this goes through the Jays have just become the new Orioles of the A.L East they aren't even getting a proven major league starter in this deal. That team is all but dead next year. And I couldn't love it more.

Good, more easy wins for the Sox, although wins never come easy against the Jays in recent years, especially at Sky Dome. But anyway, good to see Hallday in the NL and out of the AL East.

I corrected this for you.

Heading into the offseason' date=' I was certain the Yankees were going to add either Lackey or Halladay to their rotation[/quote']

I think this is what people overlook about their enormous spending spree last offseason. It was great (for the Yankees) and it helped them win a championship, and it might help them win others, but it was definitely going to prevent them from doing much this offseason (in terms handing out huge contracts), and possible off-seasons to follow. Even with a nice crop of players after this season, I don't think the Yankees sign more than one guy, considering how much money they have tied up long term.

EDIT: So while everyone talks about how much money they spent last offseason, they weren't just spending for last offseason, they were spending for subsequent years to follow. They just did a lot of it in a short time span. Obviously I can't present this as fact, but it's my opinion, and we'll see how it plays out.

now do you think the Mariners throw a contract extension Lee's way? I think you have to...noway do you trade the prospects you have and just have Lee for a one and done

I'm not sure they have the money to extend both Lee and Hernandez.

With some careful planning, they can easily pull it off IMO.

It's possible. I'm not well versed in the Mariners' financial situation, so my opinion doesn't hold a lot of water. However, for a team that hasn't exactly spent a ton of money in recent years, it's going to take a lot to sign both of them. We'll see.

$117,666,482.

That figure is the Mariners' 2008 payroll. I bet they can reach it again if need be.

After they get rid of Carlos Silva's albatross of a contract, they'll have the flexibility to lock up Hernandez long term if they've already done it with Lee.

Fair enough. I actually didn't realize they were spending that much.

Does anyone know what the hell the final package is?

Phillies get:

RHP Roy Halladay (from Toronto)

*RHP Phillippe Aumont (from Seattle)

$6 million cash (from Toronto)

Mariners get:

LHP Cliff Lee (from Philadelphia)

Blue Jays get:

*C Travis d'Arnaud (from Philadelphia)

*RHP Kyle Drabek (from Philadelphia)

*1B/3B Brett Wallace (from Oakland)

Jays definitely got quality over quantity, and considering they were only giving up a year of Hallday and some money, i think they came out pretty good in this deal.

D'Arnaud is the true centerpiece of the deal, he's the closest to the complete package you'll get in a catching prospect.

Drabek is considered by many talent evaluators to have a much higher ceiling than Happ, and that's nothing to sneeze at.

They flipped Taylor for Wallace, and if there's someone i'm confident is almost surely going to be able to mash in the Majors, it's him, too bad he makes Edwin Encarnacion look like Scott Rolen.

What a steal for the Mariners. Wow.

All three of the prospects they gave up were pretty good, especially Aumont. But all in all I have to say that it looks to be a great deal for them.

It looks like a good deal for everyone involved IMHO.
