Figure this was big enough to warrant a split off from the hot stove thread.

Latest is that he's undergoing a physical for the Sox and could get a 5 yr deal for around 80 million.

5 years is interesting since they wouldn't do that for Bay and Theo doesn't really like giving 5 years to pitchers in their 30s. Maybe 4 years with an option?

I loved his intensity when he was taken out during the Yankees playoff game. "This is mine!"

:papelbon:

Maybe we could make a :lackey: if this thing happens.

Important to note that if the Sox do indeed sign Lackey, the Blue Jays pick from Boston for Scutaro would go from the 1st to the 2nd round.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't think they'd actually do it. Wow.

So does this mean a trade of Buchholz is imminent, or does Wakefield exit stage left?

Posted
This is my idea of a major acquisition. I have the feeling that more dominos will fall after this gets done. Perhaps Bucholz will be packaged for Adrian Gonzalez. If they make those two moves and pick up Holliday, it would be a very interesting year at Fenway.

I want to keep Buchholz.

The rotation of Beckett, Lester, Lackey, Daisuke, Buchholz? Is an awesome rotation, and makes up nicely for some of our losses on offense. Which we still have the ability to fix nicely.

And if Daisuke has the kind of year he's capable of having, rather than the one he seems to keep winding up having, this could be a legendary year.

Wow, Jon Lackey as a three starter, I can't complain. But 5 years 80 years is a lot for a guy who is already over 30 and if we won't give Bay 5 years, why would they for Lackey? Lackey is a horse, but his innings have decreased and his ERA has increased over the last couple of years. Except for a couple of starts the guy has had his problems at Fenway, but the way he pitched in this postseason made me warm up to the guy, despite the fact that he looks like a total goon. Now the Sox can forget about trading for Hallday, same the prospects for a bat, and that makes Buccholz more expendable.

There's also the possibility that they swing Buchholz for Halladay. It depends what route they want to go. A top four of Halladay-Lester-Beckett-Lackey would start to rival the mid-90s Braves.

Oh man, that would be epic. But everything I've heard suggests that Halladay goes for Buchholz +, and that wouldn't be such a good idea.

I'm baffled. Isn't a deal usually agreed upon BEFORE a physical happens?

The Sox are also unusually good at keeping deals out of the media until they're done or nearly done. That's why we HAVE Daisuke, they kept their bid out of the media.

Please stop being optimistic. It's unsettling.

No one's bid was was released until it was over. It was a secret bid. That's the who idea....

His ERA at Fenway (5.75) notwithstanding, I think Lackey would be a tremendous signing. He consistently pitches well in big games, grinds through lineups and minimizes damage in innings where he should get hammered. If the deal is around Burnett's, I'll take it. Any higher would be overspending I think.

On his Fenway struggles... I think a lot of that has to do with a lack of offense by the Halos prior to last year's playoff run. In general, he's pitched extraordinarily well against us giving up a run or two here and there but never allowing the Sox to blow him out of the park. If he would have received some run support in those games, I think his record tells a different story.

All in all... a good sign if it comes to pass.

When there are reasons to be optimistic, I am. Last off season I found no reason to be optimistic about signing the M.A.S.H. unit of Penny, Smoltz, Baldelli and Saito, and as it turned out, my skepticism was well warranted. I am very encouraged that so far we have not signed some wounded post surgical retread who is expected to play a major role on this team. I don't want to hear low risk/high value (spitting) this off season.

I think his ERA in Fenway is blown out of proportion. Think about it, he is going up against the Red Sox offense in a ballpark they are built for.

Exactly. I think he'll be a solid fit for the Sox... a 1-2-3 of Lester-Beckett-Lackey sounds pretty good to me.

Someone is out... and I believe it is Mr. Buchholz who will be headed to SD in a BLOCKBUSTER deal for Adrian Gonzalez. Think about it.. why would the Sox trade for Lackey when they already had one of..if not THE best starting 5 in baseball?

Buchholz will be moved very shortly for a slugger... It could be Miggy Cabrera..it is more likely Gonzalez as Hoyer is now SD's GM. Gonzo will cost PLENTY...Hoyer knows who the REAL prospects are. Westy is gone... Clay is gone... Kelly is gone... but so what!

Scutaro

Pedroia

Adrian Gonzalez

Youkilis

Vic Martinez

Drew

Lowell

Ortiz

Ellsbury

1. Lester

2.Beckett

3. Lackey

4. Matsuzaka

5. Wakefield

Papelbon/Bard/Okajima/DelCarmen/Ramirez/Bonser

If that is the roster for the 2010 season...the Yankees reign will be very short-lived.. That may be the best team I have ever seen...PERIOD!

WEEI has been reporting the Sox in talks with Padres....names involved... Casey Kelly/Buchholz/Bowden/Westmoreland/Anderson

I am interested in Example's opinion about this before it is finalized. We know that after it is finalized, whether or not he signs with us, he'll say Theo did the right thing. I am interested in his opinion before it is finalized. What does he think? How much does he think is fair value? I'm not asking him to crawl too far out on a limb, since it seems like a done deal.

While I agree that this might be an indication that they're going to trade Buchholz, I don't understand why you would suggest that it doesn't make sense for the Red Sox to sign Lackey if they're not going to trade Buchholz, just because they already have a really good rotation. You can always get better, and with some question marks at the back end, this move makes sense no matter what.
Posted
I don't care about Bowden or Anderson. I can live with trading the rest of those names if we have Lackey signed, have Chapman signed in the minors, and trading those names gets us Miguel Cabrera or Adrian Gonzalez. Finally, the hot stove is heating up for the Sox!

They would be good' date=' but the best team ever? Cmon now, I dont think its enough to get back into the AL East, let alone the best team you have ever seen.[/quote']I'd like to see Wakefield get shipped to Elder Care, even though I supposedly hate young players.

I'm just waiting for the reports now that none of this is true and at the last minute the Yanks swept in and offered Lackey a 5 year 90 million dollar deal or something

That would be par for the course as of late...
