He can still hit, but he can't play defense. It's really that simple.

I'm not ready to say that. He was better defensively in September, and his injury takes a full year to heal. Besides, I think he can switch with Youks and play 1B or DH if necessary against LHP.

He's never played first in the Majors, and i don't see this defensive improvement everyone speaks off. If the FO doesn't see him as a regular 3B anymore, then they don't see that improvement either. We all like Lowell, but the good of the team must prevail over emotional attachment.
