Manny Delcarmen's performance in the second half of last season -- a 7.27 ERA in his last 29 appearances, a 14.14 ERA in September, a puzzling drop in velocity -- was a mystery to the Red Sox until he told the team on Sept. 30 that he'd had a tired shoulder for the previous three months, agent Jim Masteralexis said Tuesday.

The Red Sox were infuriated that Delcarmen had not been more forthcoming sooner, the agent said, and GM Theo Epstein insisted he have a cortisone injection the same night, hoping that he'd be ready for the postseason. But three days later, Delcarmen was involved in a car accident on I-93 on his way to Fenway Park, and the decision was made to drop him from the postseason roster.

Delcarmen will be arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter, meaning he can expect to crack the $1 million mark after being paid $476,000 in 2009. There has been speculation that the Red Sox would shop Delcarmen this winter, but Masteralexis said that Delcarmen expects to be healthy coming into camp. "The only diagnosis was fatigue,'' said Masteralexis, who is based in Amherst, Mass. "Otherwise his shoulder is fine. Manny is very confident about his future.''

Well, that would make sense for why he crapped the bad at the end of last year. I'm not that high on MDC to begin with, but teamed up with Rameriz they will hopefully be effected in middle relief next year. What can we expect out of the two next year though?

In a perverse kind of way I'm glad to see that. At least it means that we have some hope for the guy next year.

At the same time, not telling the team you're hurting for two months.. oy.
