The rumor mill is filling up fast -- and it's only the first day of the annual four-day winter meetings.

The Chicago Tribune's Dave van Dyke is reporting the Tigers are closing in on a deal that would send Edwin Jackson and outfielder Curtis Granderson to the New York Yankees.

The Cubs reportedly remain heavily interested in Granderson, but van Dyke said Chicago "may not have the ability to take both players" unless they can find a suitor for Cubs outfielder Milton Bradley.

Chicago Tribune, Dec. 7: The Yankees apparently are trying to put together a package of young players. One executive said the Cubs might have a more attractive offer and that manager Lou Piniella loves Granderson, a Chicago native.

Both teams also are interested in Mike Cameron if they lose out on Granderson, although it is not a lock the Tigers will be dealing him.

The Yankees also have the ability to take on starter Edwin Jackson, and a report in USA Today had Jackson being close to leaving the Tigers in a trade.

AOL FanHouse's Ed Price reported earlier that the New York Mets were rumored to have acquired Tigers pitcher Edwin Jackson. However, News Day's Ken Davidoff said a Mets official has since denied the rumor.

That be the case, Jackson still appears to be available on the trade market, but as USA Today's Bob Nightengale notes, he could be traded as early as today.

Despite the Tribune's report, Fox Sports said a team in the National League is most likely to land Jackson. The Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners are reportedly "known to have interest." The report also said the Brewers, Mets and Dodgers are not interested in Jackson.

That be the case, an earlier report suggesting a trade involving Jackson and Dodgers reliever George Sherrill can be dismissed.

That be a big move for NY. Takes them out on just about every other trade candidate though. Could be a good think.

Jackson is due a regression IMO, not sure how much though.

Granderson might hit 40 HR @ Coors East lol

Many things have been "close" today, only to fall through shortly thereafter. Considering what Detroit has been asking for, I expect this to be no different, and I really hope I'm right.

It's interesting, but your right, it could be shot down any minute lol.

I'd like to see a more legit source before analyzing this too much, but...

Unless they really do trade Hughes and Jackson, this is a great deal for NY. Granderson had a down year by his standards but still had an average offensive season. He had a .276 BABIP in 2009 which should improve. Plus he's a lefty pull hitter, so one can expect his SLG to increase. He hit 30 HR in 2009 and could get 35+ in 2010. He's a solid fielder also.

I'm not as high on Jackson--I don't think he's as good as his 2009 season but he will be a solid 3 or 4 in the Yankee rotation.

I disagree.

Granderson is absolutely horrible against LHP.

.183/ .245/ .239 .484 OPS.

Expect that weakness to be further exploited.

This is true, but he's also a monster against RHP. The Yankees just have to give him the Trot Nixon treatment.

Yeah but they'd have no particularly stellar option against LHP unless they sign DeRosa.

If the Yankees do get Granderson' date=' does he play CF and Cabrera to LF, vice versa or another option in LF?[/quote']

They probably stick Granderson in a corner and buh-bye Damon.

That article was written around 3 PM and at 4 PM Buster Olney said:

for the Yankees to get Granderson, it will cost Phil Hughes and Austin Jackson

and at 8 PM he said:

The Granderson talks are like the Halladay talks in July: The team is asking for the moon and stars, and if they get want they ask for, great. But asking for and getting what they want are two different things for the Tigers.

Seems fishy to me.

^Expected.

Do you see it anywhere else? I read a post on a Mets board that reported that Adrian Gonzalez to the Sox will get done during the meetings too - doesn't mean it will happen, is mlive.com really more credible than Buster and ESPN?

No, the reason I said "expected" was because, considering the Tigers' reported asking price, it makes absolutely no sense from the Yankees' perspective.

Got it right the first time. Melky to left, Grandy in center.

Nate Gray, I beat you on this oen hours ago in the Yankees offseason thread. I didn't think a RUMOR lacking in credibility deserved it's own thread.

That trade would seem lopsided to me. The Yankees would be getting the short end (on paper' date=' anyway).[/quote']

I agree, thats why I'm hoping it's further off than the Tribune is reporting.

Melky would really be a weak LFer.

Apparently the talks were of a three-team trade with Edwin Jackson going to the D-Backs. Talks have since died down and nothing is close.

Here's what was being thrown around.

• The Yankees would receive Granderson from the Tigers and one or two prospects from the Diamondbacks.

• The Diamondbacks would get Jackson from the Tigers and Ian Kennedy from the Yankees.

• The Tigers would get right-hander Max Scherzer from the Diamondbacks, Austin Jackson and left-handed relievers Phil Coke and Michael Dunn from the Yankees.

Well' date=' based on his offensive production, I don't think Melky would rank too high among left fielders.[/quote']

Compared to Granderson? Really...

I thought you meant defensively at first, which is why I scratched my head.

And while I agree his numbers aren't ideal for a COFer, he's a much more productive LFer than Granderson would be.

My apologies, then. Carry on. Haha.

I wasn't comparing Melky and Granderson. All I'm saying is that Melky's offensive production would be below average at a COF spot.

If the Yankees don't go after Holliday or Bay, I'd prefer if they just brought back Damon, and kept Melky in center field.

I don't disagree. The only reason I said Melky in left was because he asked if we acquired Granderson who should play left and who should play center. I really thought you were advocating Granderson as a better left fielder for a second
