Really? I didn't realize you could trade draft picks. I know you can trade Rule 5 draft selections as we've seen countless times over the years, but not the picks. Comes as somewhat of a surprise to me. You got a link?

If this is the case then the Yankees must have their eye on somebody to trade so high up.

Interesting. I wonder if they get the pick outright or if they arranged for Washington to draft a selection and then trade them to the Yankees much like the Cubs and Reds did with Josh Hamilton a few years back.

I think they cut a deal with the Nats. The Yanks will tell them who to select and then that player will be traded to NY.

So is it the first pick in the Rule 5 Draft?

I believe Washington has to draft him and then trade him and all the Rule 5 draft rules still apply to the Yankees when traded

You are correct. That protection is provided unless a deal is struck to put that player in the minors or until that player is returned to their original team

Happy to see Bruney finally out of here. After his DL stint he was either ineffective or lucky (falling behind and hard hit balls), yet Girardi continued to go to him. Fortunately he won't have that option this year.

Exactly. There is an interesting name out there that could throw his hat into the ring.

Koby Clemens is eligible. He was moved from 3b to catcher and was absolutely nasty last yr, granted in a hitters league. .345/.419/.636 with 22 homers as a 22 yr old in A+. But I doubt they pick a kid who hasnt played in AA yet who plays a position that our farm is the deepest

he would have to be kept on the 25 man roster the whole year.

That's what I figured.

What's the date for the Rule 5 this year? There's absolutely NOTHING on it on mlb.com like there usually is in years past, and I can't find anybody previewing it, not even Baseball America.

I agree, Clemens was ridiculous last season. He seems to have really picked it up and some scouts say he is now on the fast-track. I agree we need to see the kid play above A+ but idk if I would be against drafting him and bringing him to camp just to see what he can do (unless there's a better selection out there). I bet daddy would love to see his son in pinstripes. Half of all Rule 5 picks are returned to their club by the end of Spring Training anyway.

So apparently there are a few diamonds in the Rule V draft. I'd be really interested to see if Cashman can get a decent player.

I looked this up, and this was really cool. There is one player who is in the Hall of Fame who was a Rule V draftee. Can you guess who it is? [Answer at the bottom]

The following players were Rule V draftees, and all were All-Stars at one time or another. Pretty cool.

All Stars [i didn't confim this list of whether they made the All-Star team or not]

* George Bell

* Paul Blair

* Bobby Bonilla

* Jody Davis

* Darrell Evans

* Kelly Gruber

* Josh Hamilton

* Willie Hernández

* Dave Hollins

* John Hudek Selected in minor league portion.

* Dave May

* Mike Morgan

* Jeff Nelson

* Scott Podsednik Selected in minor league portion.

* Bip Roberts

* Johan Santana

* Joakim Soria

* Manny Trillo Selected in minor league portion.

* Derrick Turnbow

* Dan Uggla

* Shane Victorino (twice)

Answer:

Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente

Clemente...without having to look B)

Imagine if he stayed with the Dodgers and played in Brooklyn.

Interesting note from Buster Olney:

With the Brian Bruney trade, the Yankees set themselves up with the No. 1 pick in the Rule 5 draft, and they already know who they are going to take.

I'm really curious about this deal now.

Actually, the more I think about it...this deal makes ZERO sense from the Nationals point of view.

Why trade the number one pick in the Rule V draft when your team sucks ass? Do the Nationals really feel they can't get a good young player off of a better team's scrap heap?

For Bruney?

His numbers at AA weren't too impressive this year, although they weren't too bad either. Idk, I have a hard time seeing him stick beyond spring training. Perhaps my projection based on a quick glance at his numbers could be way off, which I'm hoping is the case if he is indeed their selection, but idk.
