Hey all im new here but love the sox more than my mom and pops, haha. not really, but anyway i read this article today on the sox website Jose Iglesias (tried to link it but since im new here i cant post URLs yet) and wanted to hear some thoughts on the matter. I think itd be pretty interesting seeing Iglesias on the field, sure he has a lot of growing to do, but my opinion would be sign Marco Scutaro to a one year deal, and give Iglesias about 40-60 games during the season. Help him learn a bit from a seasoned SS like Scutaro. Could be pretty exciting!

No way Scutaro signs for one year, nor would I want him for just 1 given that he is a type A free agent. Jose needs some time in the minors - remember, he has not played organized baseball since August 2008, I believe. No reason to rush him now.

According to some here, he could "Debut next year", but your post exemplifies what logic would dictate for the kid. Get a stopgap. Let him develop. His offense needs a lot of work.

He played in the Arizona Fall League this offseason. His stats are on http://www.soxprospects.com/players/iglesias-jose.htm He played well on the Defensive side and hit well. We will see him in Spring Training and in Late September prolly if we have a playoff spot locked or we are out of the race.

I realize that, but I meant before the AFL. I posted videos of him in the "Jose Iglesias" thread in the Minor League sub-forum.

from playing in cuba where he did not hit a single HR in 75 games to the AFL where he hit two in 18 games. Even though his Ops was down from where it was he is still coming off not playing in a year and to still hit there is pretty damn good.

He could've had an "Over 9,000" OPS in the AFL.

He still needs time for cultural adjustment and a full-time role in the minors.

It's called development for a reason.

I didn't say he didn't need it. the other post was not about fact just hypothetically.

Again with "hypothetically".

Just come to terms with the fact that Iglesias ain't sniffing the majors next year, and if he does, either something went terribly wrong with the season, or the FO is being incredibly stupid.

I already know he won't start the Season with the team or be with them this year that is why it is hypothetical. He will be with the team in Spring Training and possibly in September.

Not possibly in September. If the FO is smart he won't sniff the Majors in September, April, May, June, July or August.

What he needs is to stay in the minors.

Again, it's called development for a reason.

If blue-chippers like Evan Longoria and Joe Mauer didn't smell the Majors until their respective FO's deemed them ready, why should Iglesias who hasn't even played college ball?

Isn't playing in Cuba like college. lol. You don't think they will bring him as a September call up because he is on the 40 man Roster.

I don't think they will this year for two reasons:

A) It's highly likely the Sox will be in a full-out battle for the AL wild-card berth until the very end.

B ) They know they have to be very careful to maintain the kid's confidence level up. Having him look overmatched in a couple AB's against major league pitching is not going to help.

A) i figure the Sox lock it up but not early.

B ) If he looks over matched it could always help his development showing the things he needs to improve on. He could be used in a purely defensive roll.

A) You're dreaming, take the rose-colored glasses off.

B ) That makes absolutely no sense.

A) I only really see the Rangers and maybe the Rays being a real threat. Who else will threaten us.

B ) If he looks over matched on the inside FB like Holliday (hahhah) he could work on it in the MILB

You don't see the Rangers of Rays as enough of a threat?

Then i don't know what to tell you.

The kid needs development and there is no way he should play on the major league roster at all during any point next season. He hasn't played any level of pro ball in America, and he hasn't played any baseball in a while period. So, he needs to polish his skills in the minors, and get into the flow of American culture and baseball. He needs to be a capable hitter when he reaches the majors, not just a defense wizz with zero offensive threat. Look what happened to Craig Hansen, the Sox rushed him up too quickly, he got rocked, he was never the same and he never lived up to his potential. Maybe or maybe not Iglesias could handle the demoralizing feeling of struggling, who knows. The fact is the Sox need a stop gap solution for at least a year, probably even two so this guy can develop. Signing Scutaro to a long term deal makes no sense.

they will be a threat but I haven't seen any upgrades from there point yet other than Shoppach. Neither have we upgraded yet.

It's really not the upgrades that are the factor, it's more of the people that performed badly last year are likely to improve. Upton had another down year, but I still feel he has the 20+ homerun power he showed in '07. Burrell's year was terrible and should be better. Also the catcher spot will be more productive.

Even after all of that, Longoria is another year older/better, as is Price.

The Red Sox are set up to get some key players this offseason not only back but acquire a few.

If we get Holliday it's a slight improvement, but still a wash. The catcher position will be improved, but Varitek actually was doing quite well in beginning of the season. SS should be improved also.

But IMO the overall improvements for individual performance and possible free-agent signings it still favored for the Rays. The only way to compensate is a trade for a big bat that will vastly improve what we got out of Lowell last year. Also a #3 SP would be a nice addition, though I doubt it occurs. The 3,4 and 5 spots are way too questionable in my eyes still.
