You know me' date=' I've wanted a good cannon arm behind the plate for awhile, but when I campaigned for the team to bring in an available catcher with a great arm (Johjima) you guys suddenly found that other issues about what makes a good catcher were much more important than how they control the running game.[/quote']

The same guy that is now playing in Japan?

He might not have gone to Japan if given the chance to play on a park where, you know, everything hit in the air doesn't go to die.

I'm sure the all 30 GM's thought the same thing before letting the Hanshin Tigers swoop and and grab him.

They probably did.

Stop saying the guy wouldn't have gotten a chance somewhere. That's asinine.

Didn't he have a chance to sign with any team that made him an offer?

You think he goes back to Japan if someone was willing to offer him a "chance" to play in the MLB?

He wanted to play full time. Please read what actually happened with that situation. He gave up a lot of money to play full time in Japan. It wasn't lack of opportunity.

Of course he wanted to play full time. Who doesn't? My point is, he signed in Japan because no one was willing to offer him that full time gig. Most likely because he isn't that good. This season's Catcher FA class is weak and there are a few teams looking for Catchers. The fact he signed with Japan before the FA market even opened tells me that he knew he wasn't going to get a deal from anyone and/or he just truely wanted to finish his career in Japan.

He ends up making 21M over 4 years, instead of 2 years 15.8M he would have got if he stayed. From what I read he held talks with Henshin and his former team the Softbank Hawks. I haven't read anywhere else that he talked to other ML teams, or other ML teams interested in offering him anything. He did however talk with Seattle before signing in Japan.

I'm not looking to getting into a pissing match over Kenji Johjima, we can agree to disagree. But I will end with this. You do understand you are defending a "Dojji type" favorite?;) Maybe that will add some perspective on the situation:lol:

The fact is "Doiji type" does not apply in this case. The reason he wasn't going to find a starting gig is because he was owed a ton of money.

You mean to tell me that teams with legendary performers such as Brian Schneider couldn't use Johjima as an upgrade?

Jesus Christ.

I know the Dojji thing doesn't apply as well here, made me laugh though:D

As far as the money goes that's just a flat out false statement. He opted out of his contract. He wasn't owed anything.

He agreed to opt out of his contract to go back to Japan.

It would have been disrespectful for him to sign with another US team. The Japanese have a honor code which they respect.

Ok that part of the whole thing wasn't in the story I read. If there was a prior agreement, then it's different.

It was a clause on his contract that allowed him to end it so he could resume his career in Japan, but not sign with another ML club.

Johjima leaves Seattle for Japan.

Johjima's contract gave him the right to end it by Nov. 15 for the purpose of finishing his career in Japan. He gave up salaries of $7.7 million next year and $8.1 million in 2011.

Mauer is not for us. He will be far too expensive.

You're making it seem as though this is a small market team

Mauer is "for" everyone, and by that I mean, anyone could use him. He's out of some team's budgets, but the Red Sox aren't one of those teams.
