Arbitration Eligible Red Sox

There are 8 Red Sox who are Arbitration eligible. Who gets tendered and does not? Here's my guess:

Kotchman is an ideal back-up 1B that some other teams may value that the Sox control for then next 2 years. He's getting offered arb.\

In arbitration, they will look at his stats for last year that show him with almost 400 ABs and the arbitrator will rule accordingly. He'll get nowhere near that playing time with the Sox unless something catastrophic happens to Youkilis. Why would the Sox want to give him pay that is close to full-time player pay, when he will be a late inning defensive guy?

It's too easy to find another player who can do what Casey Kotchman does, and we could use a RHH off the bench. Right now only our two switch hiters even hit from that side and neither Varitek nor Lowrie should really be counted on for much offense.

My concern is that the arbitrator will pay him based on his almost 400 ABs and he is not going to get anything near that with the Sox. If they tender him, they will likely be overpaying for a guy who will get about 125 ABs.

Kotchman's last two arbitrations have been $1.45m and $2.88m. He might make $4m if arbitration happens. The Sox may sign him to an extension or something, or sign him before arbitration process happens.

I'd almost rather give Aaron Bates a legit shot at playing time than play Ross Gload, Jr. on a regular basis.

 

If we don't tender Kotchman, we can use VMart as our backup 1B, and that's a more suitable option IMHO. that would allow us to carry a 5th OF, which I think we're going to wind up needing since Hermida's not much good in CF.

I really don't see him signing for two years. He must want to go somewhere to start for more $ than we will offer him.

 

I think he is nothing special. He's a singles hitting first baseman with no speed. He's a bottom third of the order guy, and there is much of a market for a guy like that who can only play first base. I can't see him having much trade value at all, so why bother keeping control of him for an inflated price.
