Philly looks prime and peaked to repeat but Im wondering if their staff can handle the NY juggernaut.

Martinez is done, he wasnt effective in Philly and just because he beat a AAAA Colorado club doesnt mean he's got anything remotely worth while to offer an AL club.

He looked pretty effective against LA...2 hits over 7 IN:blink:

Yes, he beat those terrible Colorado Rockies that made it to the playoffs.... And what about when he beat those terrible Dodgers who happened to make it to the NLCS?

I thought the same thing.

I have (and never have had) anything against Pedro. He knew his time was up in Boston after '04 and I kind of got the sense that he was doing us a favor by going to the NL. He knew it too. His heart will always be in Boston no matter what he says.

I have yet to find a Sox fan who would root against the guy. I hope he does get another ring in Philly. I could care less if it's against the Yanks or Halos.

I do know that it's way too early to see NY have any kind of baseball championship parade for my tastes.

You and me both!! I'd be tough to stomach.

I have a feeling you won't have to worry about that.... The Phils are gonna' win the WS.

When he pitched in Boston, it was a huge event. All eyes were on him. Everyone else in the game served as a back drop. He has to miss that.

He's starting game 2 in NY. I am actually really looking forward to this game now. I am really interested to see what he can bring. I for one obviously hope he pitches great for multiple reasons. 1. being it would mean the Yankees probably lose the game, and 2. maybe it would make Theo consider him for next season in the 5 spot. I have never been very nostalgic. I understand how today's game works and I fully except it. But there have always been 2 players I would like to see in a Boston uniform again, more for the story/nostalgic reasons then anything. And that's Nomar and Pedro.

Petey got annilihated the last 3 years agains sucky clubs and just maybe rested enuff here to keep Ny off their game but history tells us to expect different results than he got against LA.

He was a no show due to the cold weather in Colorado if I recall and the weather here isnt petey weather, 45 degrees and cold drizzle wont help him and his beat up body. Id hate to see him pull a Clemens by getting ko'd and feigning the old ""strained hammy, stiff neck, sore shoulder"" ******** that Clemens pulled in every playoff game he got hammered in.

the yanks owned him and their current lineup is better...

The NL is a AAAA league with this Philly club being the exception. this Philly club beat the piss out of Sabbathia last year in his 1 playoff start. if im not mistaken Sabby didnt get out of the 3rd inning.

I just dont see Lee Martinez Blanton and the young guy(forgot his name) matching up with the Yanks bats and decent rotation plus Brad Lidge is shaky to say the least where as Rivera is pitching lites out again....The yanks are a 2-1 favorite here so you'll get a good price on Philly if you really like them.

I been riding the Yanks and have been treated well, I may avoid tonight due to Cliff Lee being a mystery since he went to Philly but if the Phillies get game 1 I really like their chances in maybe 6 games, if the Yanks win tonight I see them winning it all in 5 including a big beating on Martinez tomorrow evening.

I'll be rooting for him, Id love to see him go out in glory as he was the best pitcher I have ever seen in my life.

Nostalgia doesn't win ballgames.

The 5 spot should be occupied by someone who can eat up a lot of innings and post around a league-average ERA, or 2 reclamation projects with lights-out stuff when healthy. Though option one is preferred by yours truly as of right now.

He did did he?

In my opinion the dodgers and the rockies wouldnt make the playoffs in the American League, in fact they'd have a hard time playing .500 ball in the AL and wouldve fought toronto and baltimore for 4th place in the AL East. and lets make it clear, he didnt beat LA as they came back and beat Philly after his marvelous effort.

what game did he beat Colorado in?? He was scratched due to the weather if I recall so I dont think he beat them either..... but Im going to play along just the same.

Petey has become a smarter pitcher and is looking at getting the 3 outs an inning rather than trying to blow everyone away as he did in Boston...

The problem he has in NY is there arent easy outs 1-9, they are deep in every at bat and this is why I think Martinez gets tuned up badly, you have to go after all these guys with no let up.

Im hardly a Yankee fan. I f***ing hate the Yankees.

i think the panel knows that Id rather gouge out my testicles with a melon baller than see the Yanks win the title... but I tend to deal in reality as well and I see easy money out there if Petey pitches in the bronx.

the philly outfielders best run like Usain Bolt if they want to keep this close

Reality tells me Petey will struggle tommorow evening and I will be the guy rooting loudest for him from Boston to Baton Rouge.

hes the closest thing to Muhammed Ali that baseball has offered us, pure greatness was he in his prime. nobody was better than Martinez when he pitched in Boston but he's all of 7 years removed from greatness and only 18 months removed from sucking real bad.

Who knows? I saw 18 year old Jarret Wright beat NY 1-0 in a game 7 to win the pennant and he never had a better effort in his career.

Posted

6 IP and 3 ER and 5.1 IP and 2 ER is hardly beating the Yankees 1-0. It was also in the Division Series, not the League Championship Series. People have this perception that Jaret Wright shut down the Yankees. Hardly the case. In fact, when the Yankees faced him in the playoffs the next year, they really hit him.

With that being said, I agree about Pedro, as I've shared the same thoughts in another thread.

Really? What makes the AL superior to the NL? I don't think the AL is superior to the NL.

Yes, but (if I'm correct) the Phillies bullpen lost the game, not Pedro.:dunno:

He's no stranger to the Yankees. He played them ALOT with the Sox.

No argument there. I fully agree. The Pedro thing is an isolated incident.

This is true.

Indeed.

He's no stranger to the Yankees. He played them ALOT with the Sox.

This has nothing to do with his current ability to perform against them, and that ability is greatly diminished by age, decline, NYS, and temperature issues.

He might be.

Maybe this is a moot point but the NL has won 4-5 WS this decade.... I'd think it's about even?:dunno:

small sample size

Check out interleague play statistics over the last decade. One is significantly better.

(Hint: its not the NL)

This.

Come on, have you seen the head to heads in the interleague games?

He's no stranger to the Yankees. He played them ALOT with the Sox.

When was with Boston his era in the postseason in NY was close to 5 i think and thats when he was capable of going deep into games and that was 5-6 years ago

I think you're lying.;)

No you dont but I'll play, I watched game 7 2001 in a barroom in Tarrytown when Rivera gave up that 110 foot single to Luis Gonzales that won the world series. Every NYer as well as the entire planet with the exception of myself and my brother we rooting for Rudy G and the Yankees so they could get a mental lift after the disaster in South Manhatten on 9-11....i got out of there with my life but theres nothing more precious than seeing 200 Yankee fans with that look of stupidity and bewilderment on their faces after Rivera gagged that lead...The sense of entitlement these ****ing jackoffs have has now disappeared and the Ny contingent of my office is in a panic already...I was also in Manhatten for the Beckett white washing of the Yanks in 03, that wasnt as nice as the 01 season because the people I was drinking with that evening were worrying about game 7 cause no way Petitte was going to lose to this Beckett guy

Nice effort although the Yanks seemed to be missing some meatballs.

He kept them off balance but without that extra zip he simply isnt the same man but he may have earned a nice contract for next spring due to his last 2 efforts.

The yanks lineup last night had both molina and hairston in it?

Girardi is doing his best to give this away, Phil Hughes is slowly becoming the next Calvin Schiraldi and Joba isnt to be trusted either....In any case that was a well played ball game last night and the Yanks, staring at an 0-2 hole pulled out a huge win and now they go with Petitte against Hamels, a man who is also having some serious issues and doesnt inspire a lot of confidence.

I told all who'd listen that the Yanks were the play last night, of course you have to have the courage of your convictions and lay 2-1 but they got it done just the same.

Unfortunetly the Va Tech Hokies played football like old people f*** last night, that my friends was a huge upset as NC was getting 15 1/2 points...The door to sneak into the ACC championship for BC just got a little wider with Va Tech losing.

Thursday night games are where ranked teams go to die.

Was watching that game. I think you have to give a lot of credit to the Heels defense. They were explosive all night, and overmatched the offensive line at will all night. That goal-line stand was impressive. I think Va Tech actually lost yardage.

And I don't think anyone wanted to be that running back (Williams?) at the end of the game. I've never seen a a guy that broken up over a single play before. He was literally sitting there with his head in his knees and a towel over his head, crying for the entire drive leading up to the game-winning FG.

that Little guy who the Heels had reminded me a lot of Kevin Faulk too. Not easy to stop a guy who can attack you that many different ways.

To get into the ACC Championship game BC doesn't have to worry about Virginia Tech, as they'd play them in the title game if they were to come out of the Coastal (unlikely since Ga Tech now has essentially a 2-game lead over them and Miami).

The ACC Atlantic is very weak. With Va Tech losing, BC's chances of playing Ga Tech instead increased incredibly since Ga Tech beat Va Tech, but Clemson also has to lose since they're also at the top of the Atlantic, and they hold the tiebreaker over BC.

Either way, I would so much rather play Georgia Tech. lol if we're able to sneak into the Orange Bowl.

Sorry, back to Pedro vs Yankees...

Posted

Pedro was good last night. He used the fastball to setup his curveball and changeup and was able to keep the yankee hitters off balance. The thing with Pedro has always been his lack of durability, and throwing him out there for the 7th inning was just inexcuseable.

If Pedro came to the AL, he'd be a 5-6 inning pitcher, period. He doesnt have enough stuff nowadays to keep the hitters off balance through a third run through the order. And, at his stage of his career, he needs to use everything to get someone out. It isnt like he used to be where he'd start off with the heat in the early innings, then mix in the change, then the curve was coming. Now, he needs all 3 pitches to get anyone with patience out. So he shows his hand a lot earlier.

Another implication that Pedro has on this series is his inability to start on short rest. Manuel has decided to go to the 4 man rotation, which is a mistake IMO. We have always murdered Joe Blanton, so starting him in game 4 sounds like a bad play. I dont think Manuel goes to the 4 man rotation if he was sure he could have all of his guys go on 3 days rest. But I think Pedro is the only one who cannot and it throws off the rotation. Better to have your #4 starting a non-elimination game than to have him throwing game 5 or game 6 when the Phils could be facing extinction.

This also helps NY in that Lee wont be going a third time. Cause with how even these teams seem to be, I have a feeling this is going 7 games and a CC vs Hamels matchup is squarely in the court of NY

It has nothing to do with Pedro that Lee isnt pitching game 4

Manuel could of done this

Lee

Martinez

Hamels

Lee

Blanton

Martinez

Lee

its the right move IMO with a 4 man

Lee has never pitched with 3 days rest and he's pitched A LOT of innings this year .

Speaking of Schiraldi, I went to the movies the other day w/ my daughter and her co-workers. My girl mentions that one of them has a relative who used to pitch for the Sox. I inquire of course. His uncle...Jim Burton. I immediately had flashbacks and the requisite PTSD fugue state. I said something along the lines of...you know he almost ruined my childhood and you really shouldn't say that in public and for the love of God never go to Boston and mention that. Or it might have just come out as Ugh.

How you doin Seano. Other than the falling apart physically and all.
