Watching the Phillies celebrate on the field last night, I couldn't stop smiling at the thought of Pedro facing off against the Yankees.

It's going to be fun seeing my favorite player of all time pitching in the World Series again.

Posted

well they haven't dude! You're trying to ward it off because you know that's a fact!

I wouldn't count on the Angels to pull off a miracle but I wouldn't have counted on the Sox to do it in 2004.

Have a bit of patience. One game at most, maybe two, and you could post a thread like this without being all insecure about it.

I'm not getting the whole Angels as the team of destiny feeling like I did with the Sox after game 4 last year.

Regardless, it would still be fun to see Pedro mow down Angels, even though they won't win.

Pedro still has the movement, but everyone saw what he was against good AL lineups in 2004 when his FB was below his typical mid 90s gas. He was mediocre. That doesnt mean he wont come up with one game for the ages, which is always possible, but I am more worried about closing down the ALCS tonight and then trying to figure out a way to hit Cliff Lee for 2 games.

You know Pedro set the standard for excellence when you can call his 2004 season mediocre.

Well, that, or just be an epic troll.

Actually if you look at the April to end of August numbers Pedro was very good in 04. I think he was like 16-5 with a 3.20 ERA. He sucked in September that year.

Do you HAVE to be the biggest douchebag in the history of ever?

Pedro is going to go all out. If he pitches well he might receive offers from both NL and AL teams for next season. That and it's the Yankees. He's going to be pumped.

Anyone else think a Phillies vs Yankees series is going to be more HR Derby then Pitching duels?

Posted

The one thing worth noting is that Pedro did not pitch in the NLDS because of the low temperatures, but he pitched a NLCS game in warm weather. If it's Yankees-Phillies, the Phillies won't have the luxury of pitching him in warm weather.

That brings up two questions:

1. Will he even get a start if the series is Yankees-Phillies?

2. If he does get a start, how effective will he be in cold temperatures?

So let's ask the question behind the question.

Let's say he does dominate NYY in the playoffs.

Does that affect anyone's willingness to make him the guy we look at for the rotation, where we have a hole in the 5 spot?

I love Pedro, but I have a really difficult time seeing how he shuts down the Yankees. And if by some miracle he is effective, I don't think the sample sze will have any bearing on any contract offers for the Sox or ay other team.

Don't underestimate just how much easier it is to pitch in the NL.

I don't think it'd take a miracle for him to hold the Yankees to 2 runs over 6.

The real miracle would be an AL team offering him a contract to start the year in the rotation.

One game, no matter how important the game, should never make that much of an impact.

I think Pedro is a one half year option at this point. Which is fine. He could provide some valuable inngings in the later parts of the season.

I do admit pitching in the NL is much dofferent. So it is something to consider.

Or two games, in the case of Derek Lowe

Philly looks prime and peaked to repeat but Im wondering if their staff can handle the NY juggernaut.

Martinez is done, he wasnt effective in Philly and just because he beat a AAAA Colorado club doesnt mean he's got anything remotely worth while to offer an AL club.

Dumbass comment. Did you even watch any of the games he pitched this year? He was pretty good.

The Phillies have been really smart with Pedro sans his 130 pitch performance. In perfect conditions, he is their 2nd best starter right now (Hamels sucked thus far in the POs). But he has lost all of his margin for error. If its 75 or 80 degrees, his FB is 90-91. If its 45 degrees, he's sitting 87 and 88mph. Plus, he's an injury risk in the cold. This is why they didnt throw him in Colorado. Cause when his heat is 90-91, his changeup and breaking balls are much more deceptive. You bring down the heat just a little, and it takes away the velocity difference. You put him in the WS at night in the Bronx or in Philly and you are talking about mid 40s temps and potentially some rain. That is absolutely not ideal Pedro weather

I have (and never have had) anything against Pedro. He knew his time was up in Boston after '04 and I kind of got the sense that he was doing us a favor by going to the NL. He knew it too. His heart will always be in Boston no matter what he says.

I have yet to find a Sox fan who would root against the guy. I hope he does get another ring in Philly. I could care less if it's against the Yanks or Halos.

I do know that it's way too early to see NY have any kind of baseball championship parade for my tastes.
