I'll throw a player out there:

Hank Blalock. DH/1B/3B, 29 years old next season, coming off an injury filled few years, and we wouldn't have to give up any draft picks. Assuming Martinez stays behind the plate, it'll give Lowell and Ortiz some spells, and once again, Youk's flexibility would be essential. Thoughts?

I like the Martinez at first, Youk at third idea the best. I'd try to focus on getting a good defensive catcher (and a shortstop).

I'm with you on putting Martinez at first, but the FA catcher list is not too promising, and I'm afraid what we'd have to give up in a trade for a catcher. Also, what young(ish), attainable catchers are around?

They could have gotten Miguel Montero last offseason. He is looking like a franchise catcher these days.

O Rly?

20/20 hindsight.

He seems like a poor man's Mike Napoli. If he could really be "had for nothing" and the scouts think he'd bounce back it seems like a no-brainer.

Bowden for Montero was the hot rumor right before spring training' date=' but the sox backed away[/quote']

The Red Sox say the backing-up-Tim Wakefield catching job has been won by George Kottaras, but they still are looking for another catcher. The Diamondbacks, who would like another starting pitcher, continue to insist on Michael Bowden for Miguel Montero, and Boston GM Theo Epstein still won't trade Bowden

well, he's not cheap, he's the second best catcher on their team and he's currently injured. Then, consider the DBacks are facing some seriously hard financial times and he could be had for a salary dump

Very typical of you to twist this into 'the Sox didn't want Montero'.

I said the Red Sox backed away from dealing for him. I never said they didnt want him. They backed away because they thought Bowden was too much.

Really.

What we're trying to figure out is what to do NOW. Thanks for pointing out what could have been done 7 months ago, jack.

Re-sign Wagner and trade Papelbon for a starter possibly?

I see the Cubs being interested in Papelbon. Not sure what players would match up for the Sox though. Would Zambrano work in Boston? His name has popped up here and there. I know they want to move Bradley, although some people say he could be back. Not sure about him though.

Anyone think Soriano could work in LF/DH if the Sox miss out on Bay and Holliday? He has 4 years at 18M per left on his deal. That's probably less of a financial commitment then Bay or Holliday.

Honestly there could be a number of teams that would be interested in Papelbon.

Zambrano and Soriano are expensive, injury prone and coming off poor seasons. They dont seem to fit the kind of players the sox would want especially in exchange for a guy who is worth a lot to the sox and is still relatively cheap

The last thing I want to see is Milton Bradley in a Red Sox uniform.

Followed by Soriano as a close second.
