Went into the postseason with certain expectations.

Instead, we got fed undiluted crap by everyone who should have been great for us.

*sigh*

Always next year.

The Angels were ridiculously due against anyway. But still, this kind of chokejob is hard to deal with..

The worst of it is, it's probably about to be followed up by the Yankees grinding up Minnesota to make the ALCS themselves.

No I take that back. The VERY WORST of it is going to be anyone who lives within about 500 miles of the state of New York and having to watch and listen to their media for an entire offseason.

It's not a choke, it's just terrible performance. The sox didn't have huge expectations, they weren't up 2-0 only to lose it in game 5. It was just suckitude.

The whole series was a choke. There's no reason you can give why we shouldn't have been competitive in this series.

Next year i suggest you take a bat and go DH so you avoid the "Choking".

This team has been terrible on the road all year.

Just coincidence they lost a competitive first game at home.

This is different though yeszir. Being a sox fan in the past meant feeling like they didn't stand a chance. This team is too good to be that bad. Too good to be swept.

I dunno. The worst pain came when you felt like they DID have a chance. 2003 comes to mind. 99 too, especially after that series with Cleveland.

The thing I hate is that we started this off with a brutal game (some might say two games) by the umpires.

Losing on our own merits I can take. Having help is another matter

Actually, this doesn't sting at all like it used to. After game 1 I felt like they had no shot. And it sucks that Papelbon blew it, but I can't hate him like I hate Grady Little.

I agree. 2003 was the worst. Couldn't be worse. Not technically possible to get worse than that game.

Nah, Papelbon is still what he always really was, it's just that some of the air is let out of our impression of him.

Very talented pitcher and a franchise caliber closer who had a rough game at literally the worst possible time.

But in the end, I'm not even thinking about the umpiring. The Sox played like s*** the entire series.

Precisely. It was convenient to blame a game on the umps, but they didn't lose the series.

The thing that gets my goat about the whole umpiring thing isn't a sense that it cost us the series. It might have, but there's factors that both could and should have allowed us to rise past bad officiating. it's more where it put both the players and the fans emotionally. I think THAT might have had a greater impact on the players than we're aware of right now.

The series wasnt choked away, as the Angels were the better team. The sox did not choke away game 3 as a team because their team handed their closer a 3 run lead, then added another run after he let two of them back in. This was a unilateral choke by Papelbon. He paints Wagner, then gets 2 outs, only to give up an 0-2 hit to Aybar and walk the tying run. Papelbon's image as a shut down postseason closer should be considered a memory. This wasnt a homerun that was blown out or an error filled inning to lose a game. This was just a pitcher who has lost some of his stuff (read splitter) who is now a hittable, above average, but not spectacular closer.
