Would it have looked better if he had dived for a ball that he could not get to and it rolled behind him?

He could not catch it on the fly and he knew it. Camera angles make some things possible.

That was not a ball that could be caught.

Probably couldn't catch it, but he wasn't exactly busting it to get over there. I know that if that had been one of our guys I would be pretty pissed at the effort.

That is awful. The umpires have been bad all year and the home plate umpire just took a game into his own hands. Really terrible.

The ump was squeezing the pitchers all night, on both sides. Yeah, that pitch to Green should have been strike three, but the Red Sox pitchers were victimized by some crap calls too.

You don't want to let a bad ump decide a game in the ninth inning, you don't walk a .231 hitter on four pitches with two outs, then give up back-to-back hits, then go to a full count on a .236 hitter and give the ump a chance to mess up. You do that and you can't blame the ump.

I want to apologize to anyone on this board who I might have offended tonight with my frustration. There is a reason why I almost always stay away from the Red Sox game threads and I should have heeded my own advice. I was caught up in the heat of the moment.

Anyway, I will explain one thing though. At least one person said to me that I shouldn't be upset because at least my team won. At this point in the season, a Yankee win and a Red Sox mean absolutely the same thing to me. That has nothing to do with any hatred towards the Red Sox, as I've stated numerous times on this site that I don't hate the Red Sox at all. However, in terms of clinching the division, they both have the same importance.

Dude you don't have to apoligize. It's not really a big deal.

As msbulldog has said, there is no reason for you to apologize. You want your team to succeed. That's understandable.

wow the red sox only have one more series vs. teams with winning records. the one left with the LAA and the NYY series.

the Yankees have four teams with .500 and better. TB, SEA, LAA and BOS. The Red Sox are looking really good. before tonight the red sox starters over the past 6 games had an era of 0.48

DIVISION TITLE HERE WE COME

As much as I want the Red Sox to make a push for the division, I don't think they will. That means a serious effort that would traduce into a loss in an early postseason series. Francona knows that, and he will start resting his players as soon as he can.

Of course, that doesn't mean that you try to win every game and in the past days a lot of good things have occured to the Sox, but let's be realistic: the yankees are now with Chamberlain in short starts (dunno if good or bad lol), Gaudin and Mitre starting regularly, Pettitte skipped, etc. Even there, the yanks going 8-7 the rest of the way means that Boston has to go 16-2 to tie... You tell me...

So, yeah, I hope they make a push for the division.

Some food for thought…. If the Sox gain 3 games by next Friday and they find a way to sweep the Yankees that would put us .5 games out of first place. I am pretty sure you guys would be a little scared. Anything can happen at this point.

Also, if the Sox have all their pitchers back and are firing on all cylinders for the playoffs (however they get in) I think they have the best pitching and will be favored. Pitching always wins in the playoffs.

Ok, so I just got to watch the end of the game again because I was soooo excited I really did see everything that I might have been able to.

With everyone bitching about what happened, I think if you can, you should go back and watch because Green's check swing was not a swing and the pitch that was border line if you look again, it was just at the bottom of his knees. That could have gone anyway and the ump gave it to the Sox.

Now, with all this said, Rivera is a lazy ******* (IMO) because that ball should have been caught. Hell, at least look like you care and dive for it. If that was Bay we would all be PISSED!

I couldn't agree more. The check swing wasn't particularly close. The last pitch was low -- framed nicely, but low. Could it have been called a strike? Sure. Worse pitches get called strikes all the time. But it was by no means an obvious strike. At best, it was in what you might call the discretionary zone. And I think someone here said that the ump had been squeezing both sides all night. So the ump has been calling close pitches ball all night... what's the big surprise that he does it again here?

Let's put it this way: I'd be pretty hacked off if a Red Sox batter got punched out on the same pitch to end a game.

Here's the takeaway:

* Fuentes stunk last night. That's indisputable.

* Green had a pretty ballsy at-bat.

And the big one...

* Our B-squad beat the Angels with Paul Byrd on the mound. EVEN IF you think the Green AB was highway robbery, our B-squad put 7 runs on the Angels. Heh.

Well said.

I know the Angels fans are pissed (living in LA helps) because the Red Sox did not have their best Lineup and Paul Byrd on the rubber.

I really love the way we are playing and it seems to be coming together at the right time. :D

I was watching the NESN feed of the game and they have the Amica Pitch Cam. It clearly showed that it was a strike. It was not even close to the bottom of the zone.

Oh well!

The Sox got a break. These things even out over the course of the season.

ESPN strike zone showed it as a borderline strike, so does Gameday.

Youk, Drew, V-Mart all out.

All wussies by Yaz's standards. He'd be ashamed to show his face around Fenway if he missed as many games in 3 seasons as each of these guys missed this season.
