Schilling and Beckett pitched/pitch well in the AL' date=' but they didn't suck in the NL either, at all.[/quote']

Schilling was never Schilling in the AL, Beckett is a good example, probably overlooked him for being so obvious lol.

since when do a middle reliever's ERA' date=' or for that matter saves, matter when discussing the merits of that pitcher?[/quote']Embree was the closer for a period with the A's in 2007, and he did well. If you don't agree that ERA is a valid measure of performance, all of Embree's AL numbers in 2007 and 2008 were better than his 2009 NL numbers.

John Smoltz.

Schilling 2004 numbers surpassed his career numbers by a pretty sizable margin.

Take into consideration the fact that Schilling was pretty mediocre at the start of his career.

Yeah, but his 2004 season still was one of the best years he ever had. Going by ERA+, it was his third best. His prime years were in Arizona, where he finished with a 148 ERA+, he bested that in 2004.

Well going by ERA + perhaps, but his other peripherals, (specially K's) weren't so impressive compared to his career bests.

How about Andy Pettitte?

2006 for the Astros he's 14-13 with a 4.20 ERA, 2007 for the Yankees he's 15-9 with a 4.05 ERA

You kinda have to cherry pick around Pettitte's 2005 performance though

Schilling and Beckett were ace pitchers though. Where's the Brad Penny of the NL who's a below average pitcher that sucked in the NL and came to the AL to light it up? There are none

EDIT: ,Champ

You also have his insane 2005 with Houston.

Not hard to dismiss that as a fluke year when you look at the performances around it.

Pettitte did the same for the Yankees in 1997 and arguably in 2002. He typically performed at a certain level but occasionally had these stretches of dominance.

I guess it's more sensible to put it this way.

No, his 2005 year was still substantially better.

Two games means Brad Penny is lighting up the NL? In 2008, he had a 6+ ERA in the NL West. His career ERA in the NL is over 4. That's lighting up the league?

The difference in ERA is not that vast, and Pettitte threw 240 innings in 1997. I think it's closer than you think

The two seasons bracketing his 2005 performance average out to an ERA of about 4. I think it's pretty clear that 2005 was a fluke year for Andy Pettite.

Penny is throwing upper 90's again. When he's throwing that gas he has typically been good in the NL. He can get away with being a 2 pitch pitcher in the NL when he's throwing like that. Hes had years of success in the NL doing this. He just couldn't get away with it in the AL IMO.
