I find it funny that Beckett's start last night is just being swept under the rug. No discussion at all, almost like people are afraid to discuss it. But looking at the trend over the last 3 games, there is definitely cause for concern. His start vs Detroit looked good on paper, but it started a strange trend for a pitcher who has been known to give up gopherballs when not physically or mentally right (see 2006). Over his last 3 starts, Beckett has allowed 10 homeruns which is the exact same amount of homers he had allowed coming into this 3 game stretch.

Now I didnt get to watch the game last night, I did get to listen to it. And the announcers were talking about a dip in velocity and it was reported again at ESPN.com that Beckett was seeing a velocity dip. Is this just a blip on the radar, or is Josh Beckett facing an injury or some tired arm? Neither of those situations would be good for the sox who truly rely on Josh to win every time out or else.

I did find it kinda stupid that Francona sent him out there for the 8th when the yankees already had a 3 run lead and Beckett was over 100 pitches. Josh may not be handling the workload at this point. And, on the same night, we saw CC slide ahead of the sox ace in the Cy Young discussion

Beckett's FB seemed a little flat last night. Not really moving like it was when he was pitching really well this season. Is it concerning? To some extent yes. But it is just a 2 start stretch, and most pitchers have a couple bad starts here there. I think when the Rosters expand he should get a little extra rest. Maybe not miss a start, but shuffle the rotation a bit so Beckett and Lester get a couple extra days off. It might really help.

But I would imagine there just going to let him work it out on the field. Which is fine too.

they dont have a choice but to let it play out on the field. It isnt like they have the luxury of a big lead. They are fighting for their playoff lives. Any decrease in the frequency that Beckett takes the mound is a decrease in the chances that the sox have of making the playoffs.

Beckett has had a stretch of good starts, and now a couple of bad ones. Maybe a sign of fatigue. Athletes are like race horses. They peak in performance, decline and then need a rest--which starters don't usually get. He should skip a start.

Sabathia is so fat and out of shape early, it takes him half a season to get sharp. Being with the Yankees, and pitching well as he does down the stretch, he's a good bet for the Cy Young.

As usual when as Sox player is involved, Jacko is busy making things sound worse than they are.

Every kind of player has the occasional string of bad outings, and a starting pitcher is no exception. I'd be more alarmed if the stuff was good and he was still being tattooed.

I'm not saying there's no problem here, what I am saying is that it's way too soon to panic, or even to not expect the old Beckett the nex time out.

C'mon guys, if nothing else, we don't necessarily want to keep this thread alive do we?

Ohhhhhhh guess so!

Thankfully, it'll be a long, long time before I sink toward your level.

Oh, stop. You left yourself open and I took the cheapshot joke.

We're not addressing the topic honestly because we don't take your dreams/theories of a Beckett implosion very seriously, not the mention the original post is full of Yankee fan troll speak, such as 'people are afraid to discuss it', and 'CC is now ahead of Beckett in the cy young race'.

A. I was the first to discuss it and immediately it was ignored and my status was questioned.

B. CC has more wins on the best statistical team in the majors, which the voters seem to love, the same WHIP, more IP and a lower ERA.

Where is the troll speak?

I don't even know what to say to this thread. I think it is both a bump in the road and a cause for concern as they can't stand too many bumps in the road at this point in the season. If there were arm troubles he wouldn't be pitching--even with the season on the line.

Nobody is sweeping it under the rug, there's just not much you can say when your ace is getting hit hard. "Try harder Josh!" "Get another ace Red Sox!" "Don't pitch him Francona!"

There, I tried to say something, but it didn't make any difference and didn't highlight anything new.

His fastball looked flat. His curveball looked mediocre. His ability to throw the ball over the plate looked fine. Not sure what to make of it. If he goes down then the Sox are cooked, so we will have to wait and see.

Thank you. The first poster who actually gave a good response to the issue started in the thread. It was such a detailed response that I dont think there is anything that needs to be added. I agree 100%

Don't you think if anyone was actually concerned about this, a thread would have already been started? Maybe precedent would speak for itself? If an actual Red Sox fan sees a troubling trend or something he doesn't like, they tend to make threads about it.

Terrific. This has little to do with Beckett. Beckett wasn't even the cy young frontrunner to begin with. This was just your way of bringing outside matters, ones that have no actual bearing on the team's ultimate success (in this case, end of season awards) into the picture to subtly get your Yankee ballwashing quota in.

What do you want us to say? Yeah we're going to honestly express our concerns in a thread about our ace started by a Yankee fan, with Gom already hovering in the wings waiting to pounce. Can we really be blamed for being a bit political about it?

You starting the thread set it up for exactly the kind of responses you've got so far.

This one is more a silly panic statement, and a tired one, than anything else. :D

So how many Yankees fan are on here anyways? Are there any of them worth debating Sox baseball?

Yankees228 and Gom when he's up to it.

Jacko's the man for miinor league discussion, but as this thread proves, he can also be Douchus Infinitus.

Since when do I hover in the wings?

I don't really understand this s*** at all. You guys are all freaks, both sides.

Beckett is an ace, one of the best pitchers in the game. He's going through a bit of a dead arm period, where he's not getting the same bite on his pitches. It's no big deal. Pitchers and hitters slump. It happens. You guys have won enough with this guy and seen him stink it up on occasion that it shouldn't be discussed this vehemently. It's like Mariano with his yearly bad stretch, and the questions of "Is this the year?" crap. The great ones figure it out.

Don't sweat it.

I don't think the Red Sox fans are sweating it. It was Jacko who made the thread.
