Boston's Kevin Youkilis and Detroit pitcher Rick Porcello have been suspended for five games each and fined by Major League Baseball for their roles in a brawl.

The pair asked the players' union to appeal the penalties, which will be held off pending completion of the process.

MLB vice president Bob Watson cited Youkilis for charging the mound, throwing his helmet at Porcello and inciting Tuesday night's brawl. Watson penalized Porcello for intentionally throwing pitches at Victor Martinez in the first inning and Youkilis in the second.

In addition, Detroit pitched Edwin Jackson was fined Wednesday for what Watson said were aggressive actions during brawl.

That's an interesting question on the appeal. Would it be possible for the appeal to drag on until Theo can make some kind of roster move to protect Lowell and upgrade over Woodward?

Also, just in the realm of wacky ideas, is Varitek an athletic enough catcher to make a temporary shift to 3B if needed?

Plus the appeal means he doesn't have to miss these next 5 games, which would be 2 at home vs. the Tigers and 3 on the road against Texas. I'd rather have Youk miss a different stretch of 5 games than these ones, not to mention Dojji's point of buying time for a position player upgrade for the future absence.

I'd rather have him miss 2 home games and 3 road games than miss 5 road games where we will need him more.

My question is, why have him appeal when we could get it over with now, and can have him back for a pretty critical home stretch coming up next week, 3 with NYY, 4 with CWS, 3 with Toronto? The games vs. NYY are most important, so having Youk is critical, plus those are all winnable series', mind you Toronto and CWS being sweepable if we're healthy and playing well, IMO.

An appeal might get it reduced to 4 games.

Those 4 games could be smack-dab in the middle of the NYY series.

I think the Sox have a better chance of making the playoffs by trying to beat Texas than trying to catch up to NY.

I think the Sox have a better chance of making the playoffs by winning as many ballgames as possible.

It's easier to beat Texas without Youk than NYY without Youk.

The NYY isn't the primary goal right now. We don't give up on the division but our primary objective is to make the playoffs -- that means putting paid to Texas is the top priority and dealing successfully with the Yankees something that is important, and would be great if we could do it, but isn't going to be an autimatic disaster if we can't,.

Doesn't matter. They have a better chance of beating Texas without him then they do of beating the Yanks without him.

While that may be true, I don't think it matters because we need the Texas games more than the NYY ones in my opinion. I think NYY already has the division, and we need to bury Texas (and Tampa) if we want to get to the playoffs. I'd rather beat the Rangers than the Yankees. Plus like the other guy said, appealing it usually lowers the suspension, in this case probably to 4 games. If we get the suspension cut to 4 games while still allowing Youk to play both games against the Tigers and a few against the Rangers. He could miss all 3 games against the Yankees for all I care. I'm more concerned with the playoffs, not with the division.

This is just a cycle, because then I'd say, "It doesn't matter, I think the Sox have a better chance of making the playoffs by trying to beat Texas than trying to catch up to NY."

Could have been worse.

I don't really see a situation where this is a good idea.

NYY>Texas

Cycle continues,

It's not going to go anywhere. You and Dipre are going to believe what you believe, and Dojji and I are going to believe what we believe. In any event we have no control over the matter so we'll see what Youk/the Red Sox decide. If the Red Sox make the playoffs then regardless the decision made here, it'll be the right one.

To your NYY > Texas argument, I'd spin that to read:

Beating Texas > Beating NY (at this point in the season)
