either could be called for and I say goodbye Capitain. (only question is who will be our Capitain now? Youk?)

We went 14 years between captains so we don't need to jump up and crown a new one right off..

Having Pedroia as captain would be the epitome of awesomeness though.

as you can tell by my username I do love Pedroia but I think Youk would be a good pick too and I think that having a good team leader as capitain provides an intangible that is important (even if you arent a fan of intangibles) so we need not wait too long to assign another team capitain and Pedroia and Youk are both great options IMO.

I can see Pedroia eventually being a captain but they won't necessarily give it to him right after Varitek leaves, with only 3 years of service under his belt.

Of course.

This is a very sensible statement.

But i can just picture it:

"Dustin, how do you feel about tonight's win since you drove in the winning run?"

"Well, i feel great, being the biggest captain of any team in baseball, i knew i just had to shoot a laser beam to left to get that run in, and since i've been hitting lasers for what? 7 years in the Majors now, it was to be expected from me in this spot, i am, after all, the BEST player pound-by-pound in baseball".

Hilarity:

It would ensue.

I like Youk for it, he is very humble and is not afraid to talk seriously to his teammates (see the Manny v. Youk dougout debacle) I think he is a team first player who does anything the team needs him to do to the best of his ability. and he always is looking to better himself before critisizing others, he is his own motivator.

And when we're done with the horoscope speak he's still one of the best players on the field and a guy you can count on to stay focused when things get tough. Good captain material.

that kind of goes hand in hand with what i was saying and the "horoscope speak" is refferring to intangibles which is what i belive are the primary reasons for being a Capitain.

Youk gets a little too emotional when things don't go well. I'd like a potential captain to have more of an even-keel. But in terms of being a "gamer" and "dirt dog" and all that, I'd suppose there's no one better.

Pedroia isnt emotional?

I do get what you are saying though you see that emotion everytime youk walks back to the dugout after an out.

Pedroia isnt emotional?

To the extent Youk is? He might talk to the ump after a strikeout or talk up Posada after getting drilled intentionally but he certainly doesn't wear every emotion the way Youk does.

ESPN.com's Buster Olney says we should know today whether anyone has successfully claimed Cristian Guzman off waivers. However, some executives say Guzman isn't worth the $8MM he makes annually. Here are the rest of Olney's rumors:

* J.J. Hardy hasn't yet cleared waivers and Olney wonders if the Red Sox could target him. They had interest in Hardy earlier in the year, but the two teams couldn't agree on the shortstop's value.

* The Rays are one of the teams claiming many players. They don't expect to acquire all the cheap youngsters they claim, but they could face a roster issue if they're handed multiple players.

If he clears I would much rather the Sox get him. 100X better option then Guzman or anything else they have.

yeah I know what you are saying, but hey this team could use a bit of fire and emotion driving it, but like I said earlier either way its a good choice. and anyways this topic is kind of off subect and pointless

I read someone on the Red Sox denied they had put in a waiver claim on Guzman. I also read a different MLB source said they had. Could be they put in a waiver claim on some other SS like Hardy. I would guess they are very hot for any SS right now. They don't really have one.

well im from texas so my team is probably a minority here and there are probably alot of people who hate it but I am a Cowboys fan.

and Roger Staubach is my favorite player of all time.

No chance does Hardy get to the Red Sox on waivers.

And why not? It may not be likely, but there is a chance non the less.

I wasn't expecting that. My team is probably just as big of a minority here, possibly more so.
