Then what o you suggest the Sox do?

If they're dang sure that what they'll actually be getting is the Cristian Guzman if the last ~3 years, they should get Cristian Guzman.

Otherwise, they need to gut it out until Lowrie gets back.

WCS we wind up with an expensive bench player who can play 2nd, SS and 3rd adequately.

No, WCS we have another salary to dump.

I do recognize that given the offsensive slump we're on there's a certain sense of "Try something! Try anything!" going on down here, but I just don't think this will go down as one of Epstein's better moves even if he does pull it off.

And what makes you think Lowrie will even play again this year?

Again, Guzman is 20X better than Green, and would only be around this year and the next.

The Nats certainly aren't dumping him for performance, but for money, just like they'll probably dump Dunn.

And what makes YOU think I'm only talking about this year? $8M is a lot of money to pay for an inconsistent player in a 2010 season in which we'll still be paying $9M for Julio Lugo as well. If he bombs, that's $17M in unproductive shortstops. This is a pretty substantial risk we're taking here.

WE'RE not taking it, the SOX ORGANIZATION is taking it, and they CAN take it to make the team BETTER.

Stop talking like it's your money.

And besides, this team has quite a bit of financial flexibility.

But since you're so concerned about the Red Sox's economic situation you'd rather they wait for Lowrie who might not play at all this season and stay with the Green/Woodward combination of SUCK?

Sweet Jesus.

so we stick with an overated Lowrie who cant stay healthy or nick f***ing green and that other guy woodward?

PASS

I'd rather go with Guzman

I'm sick and tired about hearing ..oh no that's alot of money ..... the cost

that's why we didn't TEX

yes I had to throw that in there

There's a maximum price you should be willing to pay for anything.

Cristian Guzman's $8M salary, mediocre decision making and .699 career OPS scream louder than words to me that this is not a price this team should be paying for this shortstop.

If the $ is not a big issue to them, this is a no lose move.

oh no it so very much isn't. This team may not have a lot of limits on their financial flexibility, but those limits are present in some form, and sinking $17M into the shortstop position to wind up with the results we've been getting would probably strain those limits.

They better be right about Guzman, is all I'm saying.

Are you the team Comptroller? Let the bean counters worry about profit. I worry when I see Nick Green's or Chris Woodward's name penciled into the starting lineup.

Guzman OPS in last 3 season

2007 846

2008 786

2009 770

I prefer that to Lowrie's 438 OPS this year and Green's 667

you?

Me I say that past performance is a poor predictor of future performance, especially with a SS who also had many mediocre seasons in the American League before joining the Nationals, and who is on the declining side of 30.

Bad money moves by the Sox can come back to haunt the actual roster, you know.

So having a SS combo of Chris Woodward and Nick Green don't hurt the roster?

Posted
Doesn't hurt 'em at all next year. Guzman might.

unless we go out and get Hanley ramirez I'd prefer Guzman at our SS next year than Green/woodward/ DL Lowrie

Posted

How much money do you want to sink into shortstop RSR??

Hanley's not going to be able to stick at SS indefinitely. I'd still do it since it's a smarter risk than Guzman, but getting Guzman surely makes Hanley less likely.

What IS a good predictor of future performance?

Well logic would dictate that.

Let us await Doiji's response.
