The Red Sox, seeking additional depth for their rotation,

What, Theo has no more confidence in having the 'deepest pitching staff/bullpen?'

Byrd is a better option than Bowden at this point? s***, at least Id enjoy watching Bowden struggle as a minor leaguer than a washed up guy who hasnt thrown a pitch all year.

We seem to be assuming Byrd is guaranteed a big league roster spot. Is that confirmed yet?

Since he was signed to a minor league contract, I'm going to assume....no?

Well they didnt sign him to round out their AA pitching rotation, regardless of how he pitches in the minors, the minor league season is coming to a close soon (shorter than MLB season), so I would assume that regardless, they are gunna give him a shot.

People like Paul Byrd cannot be starting meaningful games down the stretch. *shivers because 2006 crawls back into my mind*

This week has an 06 feel about it already, the signing of Paul Byrd is like the Captain of the Titanic demanding the ice supplies to be refilled.

Byrd was 4-2 last season with a 4.7 ERA. It's better then what they are currently getting. I agree I would also like to see Bowden/Tazawa getting the starts. But remember these guys are on innings limits. They might be a September call up, but they also might be coming out of the BP. He's going to need 4+ starts to be ready anyways. So he won't be joining the team until right before/at the September roster expansion. Considering that. He's not that bad of a September call up. If Buchholz could go 4-2 with a 4.7 ERA, people would be celebrating.

It's really not that big of a deal anyways.

Byrd's 4.7 era is better than any current #3 option they have. I still think Bowden deserves a look in the rotation. You never know. He might be the anti-Buchholz.

This is an obvious indictment on the sox dire need for starting pitching. I think the sox may have overstepped their bounds when they included Masterson rather than Buchholz in the VMart deal as I think Masterson is more equipped right now to help a big league rotation than Buchholz is. Listen, I think Buchholz has amazing stuff and could be a front of the rotation starter in the future. But something just isnt clicking with him in Boston. Who knows what it is, but next season is his absolute last chance, really. After this season, he is out of options. So either they stash him in the pen and have him work it out in short stints like the yankees are doing with Hughes, or they cut bait and deal him.

To be totally honest, I thought Buch's value would never be higher and that this was the time to move him. If he continues to be completely gunshy and vulnerable come this offseason, his stock will be at a pretty significant low and would likely not be able to allow him to be the centerpiece of a deal for a pitcher.

Do you really think the Sox factor in which prospect is better RIGHT NOW when determining their value as trade chips?

What' date=' Theo has no more confidence in having the 'deepest pitching staff/bullpen?'[/quote']That was a myth perpetuatied by some posters on this board who actually wanted to trade one of our starters, because we had 8 guys capable of starting. Yeah right!

To be fair, nothing outside of Beckett/Lester has worked out for the rotation. We did have very good depth to start the season, but it all but disappeared.
