From today's Boston Globe:

On Monday, the Red Sox put John Smoltz, Brad Penny, Manny Delcarmen, and Ramon Ramirez, in addition to Bay, on trade waivers. Yesterday, they added Rocco Baldelli, Daniel Bard, Josh Beckett, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jon Lester, Mike Lowell, and Jed Lowrie. There will be more today and in the days to come.

Of the players on the list, who would not be pulled back? The guess is all of them would be pulled back, but the issue is not black-and-white with Smoltz and Lowell. Smoltz has had limited success so far. You wonder whether a National League team would figure Smoltz could give it five or six decent innings as a starter in a less-demanding league for pitchers.

Smoltz been getting 5 innings for us. Tito just has been to f***ing dumb to realize that is all he has and pull him. The 6th inning has been an abortion for John Smoltz.

From today's Boston Globe:

How long until we know who has passed through? Is there a list for every team and who they have placed on waivers?

Posted
is there a reasoning behind why most of those players would be placed on waivers?

Gauge interest.

its 48 hours and the player is placed on revocable waivers. If they pass through waivers, then the player can be dealt through the end of August. Now, if a team claims the player, 3 things can happen. The red sox would rescind the player back off waivers. The could let the other team take the player, thereby making the accepting team eat the entire rest of the contract. OR, they could work out a trade within 48 hours of the claim.

Once you place a player on waivers, teams have 48 hours to put claims in.

If a player clears waivers over those 48 hours, then that player can be dealt anytime to any team before the end of August.

So no waiver/trades of any kind after 8/31?

Do they have to put a certain number of players on waivers? Why Josh Beckett?

Players like Beckett are placed on waivers to populate the wire, helping mask any real deals that may be in the works, and to keep players a team would like see claimed from becoming alarmed when they hear they were waived.

You can, but they won't be playoff eligible so there's little point.

IIRC anyone acquired after 8/31 cannot be on the playoff roster. Mike Stanton in 2005 comes to mind.

Unless it's an injury replacement.
