Paps didn't throw two balls towards some guy in the box seats instead of the first baseman.

Green was trying too hard to make the great play because Papelbon was making it hard for himself.

The A's have 17 f***ing hits. Great pitching, guys.

letting people taking a base is stupid. that is another thing that the red sox do that i hate.

^This. Defensive indifference is ********.

Papelbon didn't give the runners a base' date=' Kottaras did.[/quote']

He's not looking them back, and they have been doing this all year. Paps doesn't check runners or anything at least attempt to get them. That is Francona's call actually not Kottaras.

How did that happen???

I don't want to sound like Jacko at any cost (although I do respect his baseball knowledge)

but the Sox are not a championship team. This is what they are.

I hope I'm wrong.

They've been doing it all year, and other teams know it. That just puts more pressure on the defense and Papelbon to make the outs. I hate that and everytime they do it it pisses me off. Giving them second and third base cost a double play and the tying run.

No' date=' but the only 2 outs of this inning are there because of two great defensive plays. Papelbon is just throwing s*** over the plate as hard as he can.[/quote']

I can see that tonight, but talking about putting Papelbon out to pasture and such is just stupid. He's been one of the best closers in MLB for three seasons, and because he has more walks this season than usual and has THREE blown saves, everyone is clamoring for Bard. Papelbon is still a great closer. If we cut ties with him and Bard closes spectacularly for two seasons and then pitches like Papelbon has this season, are we going to call for his head too?

People need to chill out and relax. In fact, I would go so far as to say they need to chillax. We could be throwing Darren O'Day out there every other night, but we're not. We're throwing out a guy with three blown saves all season and an excellent track record, who may not have had a blown save if not for some questionable infield defensive decisions.

Yes, the first two outs were fine defensive plays, but how many no-hitters, saves, or other feats were saved by good plays?

CHILLAX HOMIES.

You really think they turn 2 on that play Pedroia barely got the runner out on?

At least get the lead runner and not havea guy on third ready to score.

Maybe, maybe not, but the inning goes differently if a double play is in order.

And Spud's right, they'd get the lead runner and the runner would be at first not third.

I want Paps to close games still. I am just saying that he has struggled all year and this time it caught up to him.

Whoes left besides delcarmen in the pen if we don't score

Saito and Masterson.

Has there ever been an instance where the team that blew the save could actually buy a hit in the subsequent half inning?

The idea behind defensive indifference is to allow the pitcher to focus only on the batter and to allow the first baseman to be in a better defensive position. The problem with this is that if it was effective, they wouldn't ever hold on runners. It just isn't very smart.
