The Sox have two first baseman-- Youkilis and LaRoche. They have two third baseman -- Youkilis and Lowell. Why the focus on Adrien Gonzalez? I have to ask. Is this the FO being reactive to losing out on Tex? It seems that way to me. This team doesn't need a first baseman. It needs pitching, an OFer or a SS.

Scutaro is not enough of an upgrade to warrant a trade by himself.

At least he is a SS. As for pitching, I wouldn't mind seeing Haren in Fenway if Halladay is not available.

Because the odds of them getting Halladay look incredibly long at this point, the Martinez thing is supposedly dead and we would have had to overpay by a lot (Buchholz for Martinez? lulz) anyway to pull that off. If Theo doesn't do anything drastic this deadline, at least half the fanbase will be in hysterics. Its more a message to the public than anything.

HanRam HAS been targeted, but Florida is buying, not selling, this deadline.

 

I sincerely doubt Arizona will trade Haren, they probably see themselves as contenders next season when Webb comes back.

You know what, that could be a possibility. Absolutely no one is talking about Haren right now, but Arizona badly needs to re-stock their farm system, and to cut salary. The kind of blindside move that just might work.

I wonder if the Gonzalez talks, in part, is Theo trying to be tricky and soften the Padres up for a possible Peavy trade this winter. Towers is a guy he has experience trading with, and the two know each other as well any GM pair right now. Theo could try and spin it so that by giving all of these guys to SD for Gonzalez (i.e. overpaying badly), Towers got a better-than-expected haul of that deal, and now can afford to sell Peavy, who's coming off an injury that lessens his trade value, for a realistic, even buyer-friendly price. Theo could be Billy Beane about it, in that he may just browbeat Towers into believing this, or it may just be a buddy thing of sorts.

 

Out there theory, I know, but it crossed my mind and intrigued me.

Besides having some power, he gets on base......a lot.

 

His numbers may be a bit below average right now, but he would probably pick it up if thrown in the heat of a pennant race again, not to mention the Sox' lineup.
