Red Sox working on three-way deal

Updated: July 31, 2009, 1:18 AM ET

The Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Guardians were discussing a three-way trade Thursday night that would send Victor Martinez to Boston, Clay Buchholz to Cleveland and prospects flying in all directions, according to clubs that spoke to both teams.

The Red Sox also would attempt to move recently acquired Adam LaRoche, either to a third team or in a companion deal, to make room for Martinez in their lineup, one source said.

The Red Sox have spent several days working on parallel deals with Toronto for Roy Halladay, San Diego for Adrian Gonzalez and Cleveland for Martinez. There were indications Thursday afternoon that they were making no headway with Toronto and San Diego, but that they were having trouble making the pieces fit with Cleveland.

They began contacting other teams to help make the deal fit and are believed to still be searching for a third team.

One potential reason for involving a third club was the need to find a destination for LaRoche, who would seem to be crowded out by the acquisition of another bat for the Boston lineup. But with very few contending teams searching for a first baseman, finding a taker for LaRoche could be a challenge.

In the meantime, the Red Sox don't appear to be the only team talking to the Guardians about Martinez. There were also indications Thursday that Cleveland was still having conversations with Tampa Bay. The Guardians were heavily scouting the Rays' system and had multiple scouts watching their triple-A Durham team.

However, the Rays don't seem to have the financial flexibility to absorb the approximately $2 million left on Martinez's contract this year without subtracting a player such as Scott Kazmir at the same time. One source familiar with the Rays' thinking admitted the team was still a long shot to pull off two deals that big.

Buchholz should only be moved if the return is Halladay or Gonzalez, not V-Mart.

I know it's a dream, but can you imagine the Sox getting both Halladay and Gonzo/V-Mart?

I would literally jizz in my pants and pass out.

There's no way that could happen.

Thank you, Captain Obvious.

6:45am: Mark Feinsand and Bill Madden of the New York Daily News say the Red Sox are in "full pursuit" of Gonzalez, and believe Boston could get Heath Bell too if they're willing to include pitcher Daniel Bard.

Ehh I'd rather take out both relievers and just get Gonzo.

Lots of speculation, history tells us that the deals that will get done will come out of nowhere.

Is Theo wearing his 3 day beard and the same clothes he had on Monday?

That look means hes been buzy...

Anyone else hear that Michael Vick touchdowned in Boston at 7am today?

Bard>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Bell' date=' NO. And f*** Buchholz for Martinez too I would strangle someone if that happened[/quote']

What about putting the two rumors together?

Buchholz for Martinez and LaPorta, swing LaPorta, LaRoche, Kelly, and a few A ballers from both teams to the Pads for Gonzo.

Cleveland won't trade V-Mart and LaPorta (who they traded CC to get) for just Buchholz.

There is no way cleveland trades Laporta...

Where did you get that juicy tidbit on Vick Crunchy?

The pats seem like a decent fit for Vick. Established QB. Veteran team. Smart FO. And a loyal fan base that will more then likely support the moves the club makes. Vick is working with Dungy for his off field issues. That has got to help him out. Then he could have BB helping his on the field performance. I would be for giving Vick a chance in NE. He would be interesting in a wild cat set if anything.

A running QB to back up a drop back and passer like Brady. Interesting. Maybe Belichick liked having a QB who could execute a running play more than once in a blue moon. Would certainly have helped in the Superbowl.

Because, seriously who gives a s*** about Michael Vick if it doesn't involve his dog-killing antics.

RE Vick:..VP of sales said Mike Vick was at Logan today, the VP of sales was also completely full of s***. and after going so far as to contact friends in the Staties at Logan and people on the ground in Foxboro theres nothing to this other than idle speculation..

i think we all know that adrien gonzales is a good hitter and i think most of us know that roy halliday is a good pitcher and after every single trade imaginable has been discussed to the point of pure f***ing torture we are now down to a simple waiting game to see who's bluffing and who's going all in.

When did Boston and New Orleans swap weather patterns and why wasnt I consulted?

This is the suckiest summer I've had since the chubby blonde chick from Bridgewater State came down with the crabs and a rare strain of Gonnoreah only seen in Nigeria and Brockton prior to my visit to the lab....Ever try explaining to your sainted mother why the Center of Disease Control wants to fly you to Atlanta for a looksie??...to quote George Carlin ""I never been with a 10 but I have f***ed 5 2's""

In some cases, with enough booze and a crazy enough month, 10 1's might be f***ed instead.

Nigeria and Brockton!:D

I miss George Carlin. I saw him perform in Warwick RI about 13 years ago. I thought I would pass out from laughing so hard. It just occurred to me that I discovered him on The Kraft Summer Music Show in 1966. That was the year I moved to Boston and became a Sox fan.

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports the Red Sox are still talking with the Padres about acquiring slugger Adrian Gonzalez.

Clay Buccholz, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson are all involved in the deal. The Padres are also asking for Ryan Westmoreland and Lars Anderson. It's a massive price, but the Red Sox knew what they were getting into when they first struck up discussions for the 27-year-old Gonzalez. One wonders, however, what Boston would do with the newly acquired Adam LaRoche.

...that truly is a massive price.

1:05 p.m. If Jon Heyman's most recent tweet is accurate, the Padres' asking price for Gonzalez is beyond steep: "Red Sox still talking adrian gonzo. buchholz, lowrie, masterson in mix. sd wants ryan westmoreland and lars anderson, too. He also notes that the Sox and Tigers were among the teams to ask about Seattle ace Felix Hernandez.

12:49 p.m.: Another update from MLB senior writer Jonathan Mayo via Twitter: "Source tells me chances of Tribe dealing [Victor Martinez] is about 50 percent"

12:45 p.m.: MLB.com senior writer Jonathan Mayo tweeted that the he is hearing that the odds of the Padres dealing Adrian Gonzalez were "very low at this point".
