Lugo was 2-4 today with a double, more importantly, though, he had an error that cost the team 2 runs. Good old Lugo being Lugo.

there's no sense at all in making a move at SS unless it provides a serious offensive upgrade at the position. Jack Wilson doesn't accomplish that

Bingo. Not that a defensive shortstop is that bad a thing to have, but this is the American league East, contending teams here usually need to be able to get something offensively from all 9 positions, even if it isn't very much.

 

Also there are defensive shortstops that also actually hit adequately.

 

Finally, our backup SS is already a defense-first guy and while he's faded a lot from the start of the season he isn't a total waste of an at bat (Green's OPS+ is in a virtual dead heat with Wilson's and provides well above average D at SS, tell me why I need to pay that much more for Wilson).

To all of Red Sox nation thank you for taking the worst player from the Cardinals, he is now hitting a stunning .143 in AAA. On the other hand Mr. Lugo is doing pretty dang good for the Cards right now he is an upgrade and boy did we need it.
