By far the single best part of the Royals season for me, screw Zack Greinke! Now I can begin to take my front office seriously again!

Royals DFA Tony Pena Jr.

By Mike Axisa [July 16 at 5:28pm CST]

MLB.com's Dick Kaegel reports that the Royals have designated shortstop Tony Pena Jr. for assignment to make room on the roster for the recently acquired Yuniesky Betancourt. Pena has hit just .156-.178-.192 in 288 plate appearances since the start of the 2008 season.

I guess this qualifies as a major move for the Royal's FO. I'd be really excited to watch Betancourt too if I lived in K.C.

My excitement has nothing to do with Betancourt.

Pena blows, but I remember him making the sickest play at short a few years ago. Reminds me of Ronny Cedeno. He made an Ozzie Smith-esque barehand grab at short in Spring Training last year.

I think that Lugo will get looks from many teams if he in fact is DFAed. He may not be worth $9.mil/yr. to the Sox, but would seem a decent investment at the Veteran Minimum. By all appearances, he can still hit.

And I believe his range MAY improve if his knee continues to heal and get stronger.

At the same time, I would not be surprised to see the Sox DL him at least until they have a good indication of what Lowrie and Lowell will bring.

Perhaps the Royals DFA'd Pena so they can get in on Lugo. He's probably better than Betancourt' date=' and you can have him at a low cost.[/quote']

They DFA'd Pena to create a roster spot for Betancourt. They optioned Mitch Maier to make room for Alex Gordon.
