People probably don't realize it but this upcoming week for the front office could be the #1 factor that determines how far we go.

There's a lot of decisions to make..and a lot of egos to keep in check..and a major financial decision. Lowell, Lowrie and Buchholz are all scratching to play on the roster. Obviously, you can't have 28 players on the roster.

I think Lowell will be the easiest one..just send Bates down and move Youk back to 1st.

But this is where it gets funky. The Red Sox have to make a decision with Jed Lowrie ready to come back. You don't put 3 shortstops on the roster. Green has to be either sent the minors or the team has to release Lugo and eat his $9-10 million salary for the next 2 seasons.

Will Theo and the ownership swallow their pride and release Lugo, eating his salary? Because no team will trade for him at this point?

Also, anybody see them dealing any of the SP and putting Clay in to the rotation for the year?

They need to release Lugo. Their ML payroll is noticably less at this point than it was last season, and the games are still selling out. They can take the hit.

Clay is the most likely pitcher to get dealt, IMO.

Here's the way they're going to do it:

Friday:

Bates down, Buchholz up

Saturday:

Buchholz down, Lowell up

Lugo DFA, Lowrie up

What pride and egos? Lugo sucks, we f***ed up that one but now it's time to cut losses and move forward. No one wants him and he's taking up a valuable roster spot.

I'm just curious if you think if the ownership is willing to swallow their pride and put their egos aside to dump Lugo?

Yes?

how do you even justify keeping Lugo and getting rid of Green if, as an organization, you claim to be serious about contending for a title?

Exactly, we need to bite the bullet with Lugo. We are paying him anyway, might as well pay him to suck somewhere else rather then take up a roster spot

You are right that this week may determine how far the 2009 Sox go, but the roster moves you mentioned will not be the reason. Lowell and Lowrie get activated. Bates gets optioned to AAA. Lugo gets traded or released. Buchholz gets one start and either goes back to the minors or gets traded for Halladay. IMO, if Toronto moves Halladay to a contending team, that team will be the odds on favorite to win the World Championship. I'm hoping that the Sox get him or that the Blue Jays keep him.

Halladay will help a lot of teams. But he isn't going to cure a teams every ailment. Being the GB he is, he might magnify and slowed Lowell and an untested Lowrie. Just playing devils advocate really. I don't see him coming to Boston anyways:D
