obviously the sox winning AND the yanks losing is the most preferable, but if you had to choose one, which gets you more fired up? I've honestly noticed some people who seem to get more excited if the Yankees are doing badly than if the Sox are doing well.

You have to ask? if the Sox lose' date=' a Yankee win is barely a consolation prize.[/quote']

do you mean a Yankee loss?

above all, I am a Sox fan. Definitely more than I am a Yankee hater. The reason you probably think people get more excited over a Yankee loss is cause the majority of this board feels that the Yankees and Sox are the two best teams in baseball therefore we go into every night expecting both to win.

yea, that's pretty much what I figured. The feeling I get is that hardcore Sox fans know that sometimes teams like the Rays are a bigger rival, whereas a lot of newer Sox fans just love to hate the Yanks. On the other hand, I dunno maybe I'm wrong.

I'm actually doing a research project for school on the Red Sox Nation, basically on this very question. My name's Dexter and I'm not from New England, so I'm just learning about the Sox. I like what I've learned so far, though, which is why I'm doing this project--to find out more, basically. What I really need, though, is to interview some Sox fans. The interview is easy, basically you just get to talk about the Sox the whole time, which we all do on this site anyways...

If you're interested (and of course I'd be ever appreciative) send me a PM. It would take less than an hour and we could watch the Sox play while talked, if you prefer.

Lastly, some food for thought: do you HAVE to hate the Yankees to be a true Sox fan?

No, you have to love the Sox to be a true Sox fan. You can be indifferent to the Yankees if you want. But if you claim to like both the Yankees and the Sox, I don't see how you can be considered anything more than a pink hat at best.

Ha, okay yea if I were on a forum and randomly saw this I wouldn't volunteer either.

How's this: I know of a way to get free SRO tickets to Sox home games from the Red Sox organization itself. It's not a gimmick, it's just something very few people know about. I've been to two games this season this way, and am going to go to five more. Help me out, and I'll share the info.

oh, and Dexter will be happy to play hide the salami with ya while you talk and watch the game as well, but it's not a prerequisite to getting the SRO seats, you could just blow him in the parking lot first.

Sheeeeesh...just when you thought you'd seen it all.

I was a hardcore Yankee hater when I was 14.

im just a fan of the game and love to see everyone win

Yes, we are all winners, there are no losers!

Of course, a Red Sox win is more important/gratifying, but ANY rival loss is important as well. It isn't just limited to the Yankees. The reason why there is generally a lot more animosity toward the Yankees is because they are SO good. They ALWAYS will compete and be extremely difficult to beat. They also have a long history of stealing our players and there is really no other bidding war as intense as between the Yankees and Red Sox.

that's the clincher. sometimes the yankees aren't even as relevant as the rays anymore, right? wonder if 20 years down the line or whatever we'll ever see shirts that say: I support the sox and whoever beats the rays.

could it happen?

NO. New York will ALWAYS compete at a very high level because they have $. They don't ever need a rebuilding year. The occasional off year can happen, but that's about as bad as it will ever get.

Yeah, when you spend almost twice as much as any other team, it's REALLY HARD not to compete (see 2008). Thank God they have such a s***** GM and they fired Torre (anyone notice how s***** they were after they fired him?).

No. Nobody noticed that they missed the postseason for the first time since the beginning of human civilization.

They do need rebuilding years, just like every other team, because their core has begun to and will continue to age. Just signing 3 stars every offseason to serve as a makeshift nucleus won't do anything.

it's hard to trump a rivalry that's been around for 100+ years
