I like this kid Bates. I think he is going places... hopefully' date=' Toronto.[/quote']

I think the Sox FO have a legitimate approach though, all joking aside. If guys like Bates can come up and occasinally have some pop, can take pitches as needed, can potentially learn to play more than one position, and can make most of the plays that come their way, why would they ever need to trade or spend millions of dollars on guys like Kotsay or Hinske (or Nomar)? Same basic player, totally different cost.

Sounds like sound business practices to me.

No one's saying it's the ideal situation but it's no different than having Hinske or Nomar on the bench.

I think Nomar is the better player.

Edit: It would not be a good situation at all having to rely on Bates in big games.

Nomar can't play defense and he's hurt all the time.

I acknowledged his injury problems about a thousand posts ago. That's why you could get a two-time batting champ for someone as cheap and insignificant as Aaaron Bates. If he was still Nomar, he'd cost a lot more.

Beckett's at 72 pitches through 7 innings. His ERA is down to 3.40 and if he does manage the CG shutout it'll be down to 3.35.
