Winter Classic likely headed to Fenway

NHL set to make 'major announcement' Wednesday in Boston

The puck is about to drop in The Fens.

The National Hockey League is set to hold a "major announcement" on Wednesday at Fenway Park, and speculation is that the Red Sox's historic house will host the 2010 NHL Winter Classic.

The NHL's annual outdoor extravaganza -- played in 2008 in Buffalo's Ralph Wilson Stadium and earlier this year in Chicago's Wrigley Field -- would pit the Boston Bruins against an unnamed opponent.

But there have long been rumors that the 2010 Winter Classic would be a New Year's Day attraction in Boston. The Bruins' 2009-2010 scheduled has not yet been announced.

Wednesday's media event, being held the day after Major League Baseball's 80th All-Star Game in St. Louis, is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET at Fenway Park.

Whoopy s***.

By the way, Fenway Park, I believe, is not actually in the "Fens".

Awesome! My second favorite sports team is going to play at my favorite sports team's park.

I love the Winter Classic.

It's in the Fenway section (of Boston), isn't it? Then call it Fenway Park.

For clarification, a fen is a marsh-like area. Hence, Fenway was partially named after the traditional "Fens" neighborhood of Boston almost 100 years ago. But since, the Boston neighborhood known as "The Fens" has been relocated and inclsudes an area close to, but not including (according to most people, not everyone) Fenway Park.

Fenway is a great venue for the Winter Classic. Looking forward to it.

I think Gillette would actually make more sense where they can seat twice as many people and better viewing angles but Gillette doesn't have the history of Fenway, not to mention they may very well be playing football in January. I went to the Winter Classic in Buffalo and liked the "feel" of the Buffalo game a lot more than the Chicago one. Gillette would be better, but for obvious reasons it has to be at Fenway. A game at Fenway gets a lot more attention nationally than a game at Gillette. It would be awesome to have a BU-BC/Flyers-Bruins double header.

Found this interesting:

So imagine my total lack of surprise when I saw this tweet from Joe Haggerty, Bruins reporter for WEEI.com and all-around swell guy, this morning:

"Heard today that Bruins and Flyers are going to have to share same Red Sox home clubhouse between two teams during the Winter Classic. Yikes"
