Jays GM: I doubt Halladay deal will happen — 4:13 p.m.

The Roy Halladay sweepstakes appear all but over, with no winner.

"If we get through today and we're not anywhere, that would be a pretty good sign that it's done," Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi told FOXSports.com at 4 p.m. ET Thursday, 24 hours before the non-waiver trade deadline.

"There are too many logistics for it to get done (tomorrow). For someone to come on the spot at the 11th hour, knowing they could have talked about this guy for a long time, I don't think that it's going to happen."

Asked how many conversations he had with clubs on Thursday, Ricciardi said, "enough." But the Jays, according to a major-league source, were "very quiet."

Ricciardi said that if Halladay is not traded, the team likely will keep most of its players who are under contract for 2010 and beyond, and refrain from trading veterans such as third baseman Scott Rolen.

He even said that he probably would not trade shortstop Marco Scutaro, who could bring the Jays two high draft picks if he leaves as a free agent at the end of the season.

"I don't think anything has changed from the day we said we would listen," Ricciardi said. "We listened. We said we had to be 'wowed' to move him. We haven't been."

Engage attempted hand-forcing.

Rosenthal.

By a mile.

Have to agree. Frodo Baggins takes the cake on this one.

I want this deal to get done.

Buccholz, Bowden, MDC, Lars Anderson, Reddick and Lowrie for Halladay and Scutaro. If they want to be blown away, blow them the f*** away. I would much rather the opportunity at 2 WS titles, than watching these prospects maybe, maybe develop into good major leaguers. If we dont do it, we prob dont win a WS and our window of WS titles begins to close as we wait for these prospects to develop. We arent the Oakland A's, we dont have to put all of our hope in to prospects turning out good and keeping them at low costs until they hit the market. The Jury is out on them, all of them (cept MDC).....trade them for the best pitcher in baseball, and a SS who is an upgrade and fix to major holes in our ballclub.

Didn't someone already say they saw on ESPN that the Jays weren't gunna consider any more trades?

You believe that? Ill believe that at 1600 2morrow

Noez.

Scrub's numbers are starting to correct themselves, don't let the rest of his season fall into career norms here.

Youd rather see the abomination that is Nick Green with a glove? Or has Lowries .174/.160/.551 (since return) really blown you away. What offensive prowess there, yeah Scutaros career averages are much worse than that line.

Actually, Scutaro is right in line with Jack Wilson for the title of Glovey Mcnoodlebat.

Why pay a hefty price in prospects when he wouldn't provide much more than Green/Lowrie can?

Oh, and Lowrie's numbers come from a SSS, so don't even use them.

The hefty price is for Halladay, they are basically just swapping out SS. One of which is better than the other, the better one not being Lowrie.

If it'll be Lowrie for Scutaro as part of the deal, then i'm on board.

Wow' date=' an agreement with me, I guess there are firsts for everything haha.[/quote']

Well it's true, Scutaro might be Mcnoodlebat, but he can go get 'em at SS, and his OBP has never been horrible.

If he can catch the ball, get on base, and costs little, then he's very welcome.

I am going to ask a question from a different perspective.

If you are JP Ricciardi, why would you choose NOT to deal Halladay?

1. The Blue Jays stand no chance of competing with the top 3 in the division this year, or the following, and they know they will be unable to re-sign him.

2. Halladay at this point, probably wants to be traded, instead of pitching for a dead team once again this September, putting up HOF numbers for a s***** club.

3. The Jays will probably not get much more for Halladay than right now, when teams like Boston are desperate for his services to solidify their rotation as they march forward to the playoffs?

Why would they not deal him right now at the deadline? Will JP be this stubborn? This deal could make or break his run as team GM, he might not even be around long enough to actually make the trade in the offseason, so why not do it, see just what Buchholz gives them and maybe save his job? I think the trade could actually HELP his status, unless Clay completely bombs.

You think the Jays have no chance of winning next year, but you have no idea if Ricciardi feels that way. He might think that with a healthy McGowan and Litsch, the Jays might have the pitching to win next year if they keep Halladay. Personally, I don't think they'll be good enough to win next year, with or without Halladay, but Ricciardi might disagree, and that would defeat your entire theory.

But then your argument is based on Ricciardi basically being delusional.

McGowan and Litsch are both coming of major surgery, and the results aren't guaranteed and he must know that.

I doubt he thinks results are guaranteed, but I think it's possible that he might think there is a chance that they can win next year. There pitching has the potential to be very good, and they definitely have some talent offensively. On top of that, knowing that they would only have one more year left of Halladay, maybe they decide to spend a little bit in the off-season. Again, personally, I don't think they can win next year. However, Ricciardi might see things a bit differently.

If he does, he's fooling himself, but you're probably right,

Ricciardi, considering he came from under Billy Beane, has been a disappointment for me.

Haha, well I would imagine that people who are actually fans of the team would be more upset about his lack of success than me.
