How does Hughes look in the pen now? Still want to send him down to SWB so he can get his innings in the all-important AAA league? :harhar:

well' date=' now that we have a need, Hughes will need to get stretched out[/quote']

Unlikely. The Yankees will probably go with someone else for that rotation spot.

now that I think about it, you are right. I find it unlikely that the yankees would yo-yo him twice in one season at such a young age. I'll tell ya what, though. We'll be having the same conversation about Hughes next yr as we had about Joba last yr.

I hate to admit it, but I agree with you. Hughes said something I liked. He's going with his three best pitches, saying he doesn't want to get beat with his fourth best pitch.

What I'm really concerned with is Joba's velocity. He's consitently 5-7 mph behind last year. It can't be a question of arm strength at this point...I believe.

It's mechanical.

He's flying open and not arching his back enough as soon as he gets a bit tired.

He needs to work on repetition.

And i hate to admit it, but if he's having this kind of action in his breaking ball and that much velocity in his fastball with such a flaw in his delivery, once they get it fixed, he's gonna be f***ing filthy.

Most of his issues are in the 1st inning though. I didnt see today's game as I was working, but for the rest of them, he seems consistently 3-4mph slower in the first compared to the 2nd and on. Almost like he's feeling out the zone or like he doesnt warm up enough. That being said, I expect him to hit a wall right about now since last yr really didnt build any endurance and this yr he's been going on regular rest without fail. Might be time to skip him for one start

I haven't noticed, but I'll look for it in his next start. Arching his back isn't the reason why he isn't pitching with the same velocity [he's tired after all], but I'll check to see how he finishes. Thanks for the potential tip.

It's not only the first inning.

He usually has a bad first inning, good 2, 3 , 4 innings, then falls apart by the fifth due to tiredness, and inconsistency in his mechanics have a lot to do with that.

He hasn't hit 95-96 pretty much all season. He's been around 91-92 all year. However, he was throwing 99 most of last year.

99 out of the pen. I would say most of his starts, he got into the mid 90s by the middle innings. Like I said, I didnt see today's game, but lets try to be accurate here. I've missed only two or three of his starts and for the most part, he's 89-90 inning 1 and by inning 3 or so, he's back in the 93-96mph range.

When people were asking Cashman about the possibility of Joba pitching in relief, he said that after the shoulder issue last season, Joba can't warm up as fast as before and he can't come into the game throwing 87-98 from the first pich. I think they will be very fortunate if his shoulder holds up for the entire season. The days of 97-98 mph for him are most likely over.

Have we entered an alternate universe? This definitely is a first since I've been on Talksox.

Nope, but it's the main reaosn why he leaves both fastball and slider up in the zone in the later innings.

His velocity loss IMO comes from flying open.

Check it out calmly his next start, specially after the 3rd inning.

I will. I haven't seen his last few starts, but I'll check to see if I can pick up what you're saying about opening up.

I've started thinking he might be compensating for something.

If he is, the Yankees are playing with fire.

He does have a pretty extensive injury history, which was the reason he fell so low in the draft. And he was shelved with shoulder issues last year.

he doesnt have an extensive history. He had a tricep strain and was significantly overweight.

Yeah, only a triceps injury, weight issues, injuries to his knees, hamstring and shoulder. But other than that, he doesn't have an extensive history.

Why? I put more faith in scouting than I do in charts and hit zones and pitch f/x. I'm by no means infallible, and due to my bias towards my team, I may miss things that others who are not loyal to my team may see.

That being said, we are playing nice...and it is disturbing.
