Following the Red Sox' 9-3 loss to the Washington Nationals, Thursday night at Nationals Park, third baseman Mike Lowell said that his surgically-repaired right hip felt no better after getting four of the previous five days off and a decision regarding the approach would be made on the way to the team's next series in Atlanta. One option that Lowell has been weighing are shots to help lubricate the hip, along with additional time off. Lowell originally felt tightness in his hip last Thursday after having few problems while playing in all but two of the Sox' games up until that point. In the loss to the Nationals, Lowell went 0 for 3 before being replaced at third base in the eighth inning by Nick Green.

Who's psyched for Kotsay at 1B for the near future?

This is why having an empty DH slot over the next few yrs is vital to yankee success. Hip injuries, especially labrum issues, result in arthritis over time. You guys just need to get through another yr and a half with Lowell. We need to get through another 8.5 seasons with ARod. Sounds like Lowell's is down to bone on bone. Hopefully ARod's wont be after surgery this offseason

Lowrie won't be back for three weeks

BUT WE DON'T NEEEEEEED TEIXEIRA

/dojji

Because Teixeira would have functioned as an injury fill-in for Lowell.

Carter's been hitting recently, he probably gets the call.

The idea is that Tex would be playing first and Youk at third...

what the hell happened to Lowrie's imminent rehab stint in Pawtucket then?

Lowrie got hit with a line drive off the knee and got a few extra day offs. And he's been playing 4 or 5 innings/game even before the linedrive.

This is not good news. Hip injuries are very serious business. I see Kotsay at 1st as needed. And we probably see more of Lugo at short with Green at 3rd in some cases. OYE! When Lowrie (spelled correctly, I hope) comes back, and provided he can produce offensively, Green can play 3rd with Youk back at 1st. No need to panic.

I'm sorry about Lowell. I like the guy. I hope he doesn't go on the DL but it may be in the cards at some point if the hip injury continues to be aggravated by playing.

Yup, because Teixeira would block Lars Anderson, 20x all-star who is hitting .261 with a .757 OPS in AA

If this is the beginning of Lowell's decline, I'll be the first to admit I was wrong about him.

But Texiera is history, he's a Yankee, why keep bringing up that the Sox didn't get him? What is it going to change? He wanted to be a Yankee so badly, let him lose with them.

I could ask the same question. Teixeira knew our franchise was prepared to fully commit to him and he STILL chose to be a Yankee

Any scenario where we would sign teixeira would involve trading Lowell. I get that. but Teixeira knew that too and he knew that if he came here Lowell would not be a problem. He still chose to play in New York. There is no reason to believe Teixeira was serious about coming here, and if Boston continued to up the ante, it's ridiculous to presume New York would not continue to do the same.

the end result of every scenario I looked at was Teixeira being more likely to be a Yankee than a Red Sox, and that was even before he didn't allow us to match the Yankee offer. You can't presume we can "just sign the guy" when someone else is wholeheartedly committed to specifically beating our offer and has the financial muscle to pull it off.

If this is serious than Theo needs to make a move

we dont know what we're going to get from lowrie when he comes back so we cant count on him

Maybe we could make a deal with the Royals for Mark Teahen. He'd be useful to have around as a platoon partner for Mikey anyway and would be better at what Kotsay does than Kotsay is. And teahen is expendable because the Royals have Alex gordon.

If the Yankees set their sights on filling a need with a guy the Sox are after, the Yankees are going to get him, thats the bottom line. You can't fault the FO for not going way above the value they set for a player cause everytime the Yankees do it, it bites them in the ass. I really wouldn't want the Sox to operate that way.

And combined with the fact that Hank Steinbrenner was going to spend what it took to bring Teixeira to New York, that is why he was very unlikely to ever be a Red Sox. No matter what, Hank was going to make an offer theo couldn't or wouldn't match. That's just what it is.

What a stupid question. Would I like to have Teixeira in Boston? in a vacuum, yes. But he was never coming here because he's a mercenary type who wants to be paid well and he plays a position the Yankees needed to fill. Any thought of Teixeira in a Sox uniform when he was a major Yankee offseason priority is delusional.

the Sox thrive by working around the Yankees, not going head to head with them for free agents.

Now can we please deal with the question at hand, rather than looking back at a player we never would have acquired.

The move was to offer Tex $10 million more

And then the yankees offer him $10M more than that, and then where are we? The Yankees were "in for a penny, in for a pound" with Teixeira as it was anyway, you think they'd balk at adding another increment any more than you think we should have?

When we try to go toe to toe with the Yankees for free agents, we lose at least 85% of the time. When it's for a position they actually have a hole in, we lose 100% of the time.

Mark Teixeira was never, ever, ever going to be a Red Sox. Ever. Period. We were in the negotiations at all to force the Yankees to pay more money. That became clear when we didn't get the chance to match the last Yankee offer.

Move on.

So? He is a Yankee and no amount of whining about it will change that fact.

So when your theory on "Mark Teixeira is not a substantial upgrade over Mike Lowell" is destroyed, we move into this defense.

Fantastic.

You forgot to tell me that Mrs. Teixeira hated Boston.

I'd love to hear your better idea. And no, woulda-coulda-shoulda arguments do not qualify as a better idea.

Teahen as a bench guy is actually a very good fit for us, he as a LHH is a natural platoon partner for Lowell, and would be of assistance if we start running into problems with Baldelli and Drew again. i understand experiments with Teahen and 1B didn't go very well but he might be useful there in an emergency as well.

Because that was my entire argument at any point in the discussion. I know it's the simple path (read: intellectually lazy path) to harp on the weakest part of someone's argument, but Lowell being a competent 3B was only a part of the reason I was content not to get Teixeira. You don't spend that much team resources swapping out an above average player for another above average player.

Having a top prospect 1B close to the big leagues was another part, i notice you tried to skewer me on that as if it was my whole argument too.

Also, i don't think any but the blindest, most delusionally partisan fans on this forum knew that beating the Yankees out for a guy they want at a position they need was a longshot, although a lot of us hoped differently, and hoped very loudly. It all combined to a realization that I'd better get over Teixeira before I even started.
