Meh im not worried Dice-K will still pitch well this season it's only the first game of the year no need for concern. He does tend to struggle some times.

I've never been a fan of Dice-K' date=' even with the stats he put up last year. He's just too agonizing to watch. The HR's are obviously a concern. Wait til he starts giving them up when he puts more people on base (which he always does). I think he'll do better against weaker lineups, but we expected to get a pitcher who could dominate.[/quote']You would expect to get a dominating pitcher for $100 million.

Nope all pitchers are going to give up homeruns i mean we should look at wakefeild home runs that he has let.

thats alot. <_>

I hope if he's hurting he actually tells someone so we can let someone who's actually healthy and capable take his starts.

like Hansack? we won't see Bard or Bowden till atleast July..

Why would you think Hansack is first in line to get called up for starts?

There is a few names above Hansack on the depth chart I think...

More to the point Daisuke wasn't breaking 90 consistently nor was he throwing with even a modicum of command. I think it's got to be the shoulder.

And I'd throw Masterson into the breach. He's stretched out. He's got starter's stuff.

if he isn't hurt, then he just sucks. He has showed nothing in his 2 regular season starts and his last spring start. Nice play by J.D. running right by the ball.

Now it might be a time to worry a little. I think he is having shoulder issues. Which some of us said earlier in the off season could be an issue. They should have capitalized on his value and traded him this off season:D

From WEEI.com

The Red Sox reported that Daisuke Matsuzaka was suffering from "arm fatigue" after lasting just one inning in his start against the Athletics, Tuesday night at Oakland Coliseum. Matsuzaka threw 43 pitches in his only frame, allowing five runs while topping out at 91 mph and hitting 90 mph just four other times. The outing tied a June 21 start against St. Louis last season for the shortest of Matsuzaka's career with the Red Sox. In the start against the Cardinals he also lasted an inning, allowing seven runs while throwing 48 pitches, although he did face three batters in the second inning.

THat means two things

1: Jones' assignment isn't the usual Pawtucket busfare, otherwise with not being able to use him until tomorrow, they'd have waited until tomorrow. If Daisuke needs extended downtime Jones will be here throughout.

2: Bowden and Buchholz remaining in Pawtucket means Masterson is in the rotation. Until we hear otherwise, depending on how you want to calculate it either Tim Wakefield or Justin Masterson is our 3rd starter right now.

Matsuzaka goes to DL

The Red Sox have placed Daisuke Matsuzaka on the 15-day disabled list and recalled lefthanded reliever Hunter Jones from Pawtucket.

It certainly looks that way. Not that most of us didn't see it coming well enough to worry about it long in advance.

The only counter to that position is, is the good-name we're gaining in Japan, and the other talent it might net us (examples: Tazawa, Okajima, probably more in the future) worth the 100M investment even if Daisuke runs into these problems associated with his obligation to pitch for Japan in tournaments like the WBC?

In today's market, $100 million can net you a lot of talent.

I believe the linked article said Masterson would indeed take DiceK's spot - his next start would be Patriot's Day.

It did net us a lot of talent' date=' considering that $105M or so netted us Daisuke, Oki and Tazawa.[/quote']If your argument is that risking Dice K's health might be worth #100 million, you can count Dice K in the equation. Tazawa and Oki is not a good return for $100 million.

Can't wait to see The Six Inning Man back in service. He was very stable and consistent last time he was in the rotation, and he's notched some experience and gotten some work in since.

Sure, but I'm also counting whatever we do get out of Daisuke, plus the possible talent pipeline that $100M opens will send even more players to Boston from Japan and basically allowing us to dip our fingers virtually at will into the Japanese free agent market with a big headstart on other MLB teams (and maybe a few NPB teams) in getting the man we want.

That was one of the side-car benefits that was talked about when we spent all that money on Daisuke in the first place.

There will be competition for these players and they will not be free. Any good willthat we have there will disappear quickly if Dice K breaks down in the 3rd year of his contract.

#2 is just wrong. Matsuzaka's slot isnt due for another 4-5 days. Why bring up a starter now when the pen is coming off a day where the entire pen sans Saito was used? It made sense to bring up a reliever they can use for the next few day and then call up Buchholz. If the sox wish is to put Masterson in the rotation after shortening him to a reliever with no IP buildup, then it was a poor plan (see Joba 2008). I think the sox will use Buchholz and piggyback Masterson if Buch struggles.

Masterson was stretched out this Spring. He just pitched 4 innings last night. We can handle him throwing a 5 inning outing to get up to speed in his next start.

Argument fail.

Lester struggled early last year too. He doesn't do particularly well in cold weather.

I'm honestly more worried about Beckett. We need him to be the man.,
