I saw that he was going to be placed on waivers. I think if it is worth a shot for sure. There best prospect at 3B is Alamanzar, and he is probably 3+ years out. If they can straighten him out, he would be a nice insurance policy for Lowell.

Almanzar's more than 3 years out. Until he breaks out he's not a lock for the big leagues at all. When he does, it's still gonna be at least 4 seasons.

I do not like trying to count on rookie ball players to reach the majors. Too much line loss there.

Not a bad idea. The Sox probably wouldn't be the only one with interest though but at least he would have a path to the majors here unless his agent is convinced Anderson/Youkilis is the long-term 1B/3B combo.

You really think Marte could make strides quick enough to convince the Sox not go to with Youkilis at 3B and Bailey/Carter at 1B should Lowell get injured?

As a long term alternative? Sure. The Sox haven't behaved remotely as if they believe Bailey or Carter are long term alternatives and Marte was projected very high at one point. To the point that some people were crying into their beer about trading him for Coco at one point after we realized he'd never be what he was in Cleveland.

He'd have to come out the gate very hot and show progression in tools and skills as well as just numbers. The odds are stacked very high but I see no reason why it can't happen. I mostly just want him as a good young insurance 3B, not as a starter of the future.

After getting dismissed from a team that could really use a 3B right now his stock has gotta be pretty low. If Marte figures that rebuilding his numbers in a good farm system is a better way to hit the big leagues and stick there he still might come here.

In reality though it's not really very likely we even get Marte. There are a number of other teams that need a 3B that can give him a clearer path to the majors.

Marte is gonna get dealt prior to the 10 or 15 days it takes for a player to be unconditionally released status post being DFAd. That being said, with Lars Anderson on the cusp and with Youkilis being versatile and Lowell being at the position for 2 yrs, I highly doubt that he'd choose a return trip to Boston.

The guy is a bust. Why would we want a prospect who washed out? I realize he was a can't miss prospect, but he missed. Most prospects wash out. That is why I don't turn back-flips when we get a draft pick for losing a major league player.

Right, but replacing an injured Lowell would be in the short-term cause two years from now he's gone and the very clear long-term situation is Anderson and Youkilis. If Bailey and Marte are in Pawtucket in May and Lowell gets injured, I gotta think Bailey would get the call-up

He's still only 25, I wouldn't quite dismiss him as a complete bust yet

In that regard, he is a bust.

If he's going to be traded, what makes you think he has a choice.

I'd really like to see what Boston's OBP-first philosophy can do for the guy. In all likelihood he's Wily Mo Pena, Jr, but I still think it's worth at least trying to stash the guy in the minors.

Bosox: Lowell isn't the only guy who can be hurt. Youkilis plays a very high-effort game and has suffered injuries in the past as a result. With only Lowrie behind him, multiple injuries to our 3B depth has the potential to be disastrous. If we can get our hands on Marte and stuff him in the minors only good things can come of that.

I agree completely, I'd love to stash Marte away in the minors just in case but my argument is that I think he'll have his pick of a few places to go and he isn't likely to choose Boston because there isn't a very clear path to the majors for him here.

Who knows, he might think developing in Boston's system will help him realize his potential and want to come here.
