Yea, the race gets closer, like the Angels win the divison by 12 instead of 21

Scot Shields...

Arredondo steps in as the closer and someone will step up for the 7th just as the Angels always seem to do

Can't believe I forgot about Shields... Jacoby fail.

But there are IFs

What IF the Angels underachieve?

What IF Oakland overachieves?

Can you honestly say there's not a remote possibility that IF the Angels lose Tex and K-Rod and Oakland improves substantially that this could at least be a race?

I have to think that Beane has a side deal, cause this deal makes no sense. The A's deal away Haren, Harden and Blanton in a 12 month span. One of the guys who steps in and does well is now on his way out too in Smith. Dont knock the kid. He did have a low 4 ERA in the AL, he's 24, a lefty and he threw nearly 200IP. He's got a good ceiling. Street is worth a lot more than as a throw in, and Gonzalez is considered to be the A's best OF prospect. This doesnt make sense from the A's perspective. They dont have the rotation to belly up to the table with Anaheim. Hell, their rotation as it stands now is Eveland, Braden, Duchsherer, and ???. They found a replacement for Street in Zeigler, but losing Street takes away a key cog in the middle of that pen. This doesnt make much sense. Everything the A's were doing looked like a stockpiling process. They arent even close to being finished with a rebuild, so they go out and get a guy who's on a 1 yr deal when the A's know they have no shot at contending next yr? I have a feeling the A's are gonna swing him off. Maybe the Cards were offering Rasmus and the Rocks dont like him but the A's do. We'll see. Cause this move makes no sense for the A's.

As for the Rocks, this is a great move. Smith will slide in with Jimenez, Francis and Cook to make a pretty solid 1-4. Street will team with Corpas to make a solid 8-9 inning tandem. And Gonzalez can go to CF, and grow in Coors where his numbers should skyrocket. The rocks must have had to ask 3 or 4 times if the A's were serious. Cause this is a f***ing haul, and it will set the market for marquee offensive talent this offseason

very shrewd move by Beane' date=' but [b']Oakland's park [/b]could seriously put a dent in the free agent haul Holliday wouldve gotten

He'll probably be moved by the deadline anyway

Holliday in Oakland

Matt Holliday goes from a hitter-friendly Coors Field to a pitcher's park in Oakland. How will his numbers be affected? A look at his park-adjusted numbers (based on 2008).

there's a remote possibility for anything. theres a remote possibility that the Orioles could be better than the Sox in 2009 but anyone with a decent knowledge of baseball would say the Angels are still a much better team than the A's otherwise everyone in this thread would be saying what a good move this is for Oakland instead of the "huh?"s we're getting

Touche

I just think the possibility is not as remote as the Orioles being better than the Sox, lol.

I certainly would not predict Oakland to win the West in 2009' date=' but the offseason is young, there are many moves to go.[/quote']

including the potential response move of the much deeper pocketed Anaheim Angels

What are they going to do, trade for an outfielder?

Theyll need a first baseman if they dont keep Teixeira, for starters

Yea Id say this came out of nowhere. Im thinking Oakland this offseason will be in a win it all now mode. Matt Hollday will be in his contract year and his agent is Scott Boras, and I dont see Beane paying for such a contract that Boras will seek. Imagine the lineup if they also acquire Giambi for DH and Furcal at SS

Street was expendable. Theyve got a filthy trio at the back of the bullpen-- Ziegler, Blevins, Devine
