Albert Pujols in a landslide. He had a 96.8 VORP, which is a Ray Durham (16.1 VORP) more valuable than the 2nd highest VORP in baseball, Hanley Ramirez. He was 2nd in BA and OBP, 1st in SLG, OPS, Total Bases, Runs Created, Batting Wins, Offensive Win %.

Pujols, and it's not even close. A lot of people didn't know how he was going to be this year with the whispers of surgery back in spring training but he was consistently the best player in baseball the entire season.

An interesting debate:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2680495&univLogin02=stateChanged

"I see it this way: Someone who doesn't take his team to the playoffs doesn't deserve to win the MVP," Pujols said in Spanish at a news conference organized by the Dominican Republic's sports ministry.

So my question is, does Pujols think he deserves the MVP?

I think Pujols should win, simply because of the beastly numbers, but I do believe the door is open for Howard...his HR totals and the fact the Phillies closed out another tight race with the Mets in September could give him a puncher's chance.

I said Howard, Pujols can see it coming. he might still win but I think theres a good chance Howard could possibly get it. Howard got hot when it counted, threw his team on his bat late and pushed them towards the Playoffs(the Writers love this). Pujols had better stats, but no Playoffs. Philly won it all.

Yeah Howard was on a World Series winning team, but he isn't even their best hitter. At least IMO, Utley is better than Howard. Howard's BA and OBP (.251, .339) make it hard to make a case for him, again IMO.

(Devil's Advocate)

I believe MVPs are decided before the playoffs start, no?

Awful tough to vote for a guy who's team finished 4th when Howard propelled his team to a division title...

I'm split betweeen Howard and Pujols myself. They both put up excellent numbers, and despite not making it to the postseason, I stilll think Pujols may have played better.

I'm surprised they got this one right. Had all the makings a of "carried his team to the division title" vs. "penalized for bad pitching" farce.

Every time the MVP voters get it right, there must be a strange fluctuation in the time/space continuum, because that sure is weird these days.....
