I really think anyone can catch him with some ST practice. It's not a bad thing for him to be the backup catcher's specific pitcher, just because it gives the starter scheduled rest, but our choice of backup catcher shouldn't be based on who can catch Wake best.

It shouldnt be, I completely agree......but the whole Bard/Mirabelli/wasting tax payers money on a police escort/carnival show point us to the direction that maybe it is.

Something else comes to mind, kinda funny....remember when they said that catching Tim Wakefield made John Flaherty retire? I just remembered that....(although this was probably overblown, and the aspect of catching Tim Wakefield at the end of his career was not worth the risk reward, and hed rather fly fish than try to catch butterflies).

It's 2008-2009. Wakefield is a cancer to this team. Yes he is mr. May but come on now.

This guy is the worst active post season pitcher in the game. 2003 he was lights out until that disaster with Boone.

2004 he was so so.

2005 he choked game 3 to the white sox twice. After Ortiz and douche got him the runs back.

2006 he just sucked.

2007/2008 good up until the summer but hit very hard in October.

I get it guy has been a great member of this team but it's time to say goodbye give him his gold watch retirement gift and bring in either Lowe Burnett or Perez.

Pathetic.

He is. He does nothing use full except bringing Cash into the lineup. The steals passed balls have gotten old. Now I know I flip flopped opinions if you dig up the game 4 thread you will see how I was happy to see him.

Then reality sunk in, it's October and he just doesn't get it done in big spots. 2.2 ip?

Have fun in the independent league Tim cause at age 43 your done.

You do realize that you're saying absolutely nothing that we haven't known for the entirety of Wakefield's career.

Then why is everyone excited that we are wasting a roster spot on him.

This lineup is very very mediocre position players except tek are in tact. To stay a playoff team our best bet is to get starting pitching all over the place. Pitching and defense atones for lack of clout in a lineup.

You could just not use him in the playoffs...

Look if they add a guy like Lowe or AJ. Wakefield as a 5th starters fine. And I agree he should never be allowed to be anything more then a long reliever in October.

As long as another solid starter is added they can let Wakefield choke on it every 5th day for all i care.

Oh lord. Scaffolds, is that you?

Lack of clout in the lineup? Boston's was one of the best lineups in the big leagues this year, even with Ortiz hurt and slumping. And just by the nature of some of the young players we've got in there now like Lowrie and Pedroia, it should be even better next year, especially if you factor in healthy seasons from Lowell, Drew and Ortiz.

"Wasting" the #5 starter spot on an above average pitcher... that's a waste I'll make five ways to Sunday.

Please' date=' for all that is good in humanity, DO NOT SIGN DEREK LOWE.[/quote']

I really dont think the Sox have Lowe anywhere on their radar, just because Lowe might want to come back......it still take two to tango.

And for those who believe that Wakefield is a cancer......that ridiculous, he actually had a very good season....and could have had between 13-15 wins easilily if he had any offensive support, actually, Wakfield had 22 starts in which he allowed less that 4 runs....22 starts!!!!!!! To me thats an incredible season. The only negetive is the fact that they have to carry a s***** catcher liek Cash who doesnt belong in the big leagues.

I am the only 1 who believes he is a cancer. But like Coco's disciples said.. (I very rarely agree with him) What if Wakefield was a 5th starter and wasn't allowed to pitch in the playoffs? Then i'm all for it.

But if this guy is your 4th starter then he is a cancer cause he is a big time liability in a big spot.

Posted
FYI, the sports definition of a cancer is a guy whose attitude brings down the entire clubhouse, its unfair to use that term when talking about Wakefield, a guy who is the exact opposite of that. If you wanna call him a detriment, then go ahead but he isn't a cancer

I still dont understand why he couldnt be a number 4 starter as well. Low to mid 4 ERA, 22 starts in which he allows 4 ER or less.

I am in agreement, Id rather have someone else start a playoff game.......but #4's and 5's almost never pitch a playoff game anyway.

You need a #4 in a best of seven series

Wakefield is the perfect guy to have in the regular season but the last guy you want in the postseason.

pretty much, yea

For maybe 1 game. Lets put it this way....in a playoff series, if your chances of winning or losing depend on a 4th starter.......you have no chance.

Again, I dont want Wakefield to start a playoff game either......but compared to some of the other teams 4th and 5th starters.......there are worse options.

Whichever rotation performs best usually wins the playoff series and the 4th starter is a part of that. Yea he's only in there for one game but usually you can't afford to have a weak link in your playoff rotation. What is the Rays had Casey Fossum as their 4th starter in the ALCS instead of Sonnanstine?

Posted

Wakefield was not remotely postulated as the 4th playoff starter last year. ALL of Schilling, Colon, and Buchholz had to fall apart AND Masterson had to be moved to the pen before there were no better choices.

That's why I would like to get my hands on a middle of the rotation type or better. We've just watched a lot of contingency plans fail at once, it makes sense to stockpile as many as possible.
