Celebration on the horizon for Red Sox

Boston (91-64) vs. Cleveland (78-77), Monday, 7:05 p.m. ET

By Ian Browne / MLB.com

TORONTO -- The last time the Guardians played a game at Fenway Park, they watched the Red Sox celebrate. There's a chance they will do the same on Monday, in their first visit to Boston since Game 7 of the 2007 American League Championship Series. With the Yankees beating the Orioles on Sunday night, the Red Sox will open their final homestand of the season on Monday with a magic number of one for clinching a spot in the postseason.

"We're right on the doorstep," said Red Sox left fielder Jason Bay. "It would be nice if we had a little more control over it. Regardless of what happens, it would be nice to do it on the field. That's just me, having not gone through that before. But either way, if you're in, you're in and I'm sure we'll celebrate at some point." According to David Ortiz, it wouldn't be a whole lot of fun to clinch the easy way -- watching the Yankees lose on television. In fact, Ortiz planned on spending Sunday night monitoring the Packers-Cowboys game, not Yankees-Orioles.

"The best way to celebrate is [messing] up your clubhouse," said Ortiz. "I'm not going to be popping champagne at my house." No matter when it happens -- or whether it is via the division title or a Wild Card berth -- there's a virtual certainty the Red Sox will be in the postseason. "That's a good thing," said Ortiz. "To get back in the playoffs, it's good." With seven games left in their season, the Red Sox trail the Tampa Bay Rays by 1 1/2 games in the AL East.

"We've got a lot of fun baseball ahead of us," said Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek. One thing that has sparked the Red Sox down the stretch is the resurgence of Jacoby Ellsbury. The center fielder is in the midst of a 12-game hitting streak, during which time he's hit .345 (19-for-55) with four doubles, three triples, one homer and four RBIs. In the opener of this four-game series against the Guardians, the Red Sox send ace Josh Beckett to the mound.

Pitching matchup

BOS: RHP Josh Beckett (12-9, 3.96 ERA)

The ace has rediscovered his dominance since returning from the disabled list, allowing just two runs over 19 innings, going 1-0 in that span. Beckett's last start -- a no-decision against the Rays -- was one of his finest of the year. He allowed one run and three hits over eight innings, striking out seven. In 11 starts at Fenway this season, Beckett is 5-4 with a 5.61 ERA. This is Beckett's first start of the season against Cleveland. In his career against the Guardians, Beckett is 1-3 with a 6.57 ERA.

CLE: LHP Zach Jackson (0-3, 6.35 ERA)

Jackson didn't look much better in his start Tuesday against the Twins, and was still unable to collect his first win of the season. Jackson, acquired in the CC Sabathia deal, has yet to show dazzling stuff since he was called up after the Paul Byrd trade. He went 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits. After allowing a run in the first inning, Jackson gave up the bulk of the damage in a four-run fifth inning, when the Twins strung together a double and four singles to creep back into the once-lopsided game. This will be Jackson's first action against Boston.

Tidbits

Julio Lugo had another setback in his attempted return back from a severely strained left quad. It's doubtful he will play again this season. ... J.D. Drew, looking to return to the lineup for the first time since Aug. 17, will again have his back looked at by the team's medical staff. ... The Red Sox, who play their last seven games at home, finished with a 39-42 road record.
